Twin 35 Open Wheels at Charlotte

by Ron Bacelo
Punta Gorda, Florida -- The Budweiser Twin Open Wheel Modifieds kept coming and coming with 27 signed in the pits it was Scott Klieber that toured the 3/8 mile speedplant at a shattering lap of 15.418 to secure his fast qualifier monies. The draw of the pill saw the inversion of four rows putting Ocala's Red Vann and John Anderson on the front row for the first of two scheduled events. Four place starter Jamie Burrows made it look easy as he outlasted the competition to claim the victory ahead Doug Moff. Moff shadowed Burrows every move to lock up the runner up slot. Chasing the duo to the stripe was the Rocketman Wayne Jefferson, Anderson, Kleiber. Bill Atkins out of Ocala would take home the $50 hard chargin' cash for the first segment.

The second race was inverted with all the cars on the lead lap and it was sand bagger Chris Turner that saw his 19th place finish turn to gold for the start of the second segment. Turner would start his machine on the pole with Eric Rudd to his right side, Turner would hold on for a wire to wire win ahead of a hard chargin' Scott Kleiber who drove his mount from the 15th starting spot to claim the runner up spot and the $50 Hard charger cash. Kurt Riley held on for the third spot and chasing the trio to the checkers were Anderson, Jefferson and Burrows. Burrows was crowned the "Bud King" as he had the best average of the two races.

In the Best Coast Street Stock division Elbert Butts shook the monkey off his back to claim the feature ahead of Doug Spitzer, John Plakiotis, Points leader Billy "the kid" Vandevender and Terry Price. Heat races went to Mark Collins and Plakiotis. Walt Korkiner was ejected from the Speedway and disqualified for his night's efforts for many offenses and will be reprimanded accordingly.

The visiting Top Cops saw Bob Hart drive to victory lane in grand style ahead of Joe Gill, Phil Riles, Miami's Dick Masten and Wade Hatcher. The Top Cop drivers were nominated to be the judges of the annual MDA Chili Cook Off.

The Big Wheel 4X4 Mini Stocks saw points leader Brian Richardson take home another victory, his second of the season. Chasing Richardson to the stripe was Rick Nastan, Billy Ray Jr, Dale Dean III and newcomer Steve Booth. The lone heat race also went to Richardson.

Bill Sawyer made his presence known in the W.E. Johnson Equipment Road Warrior division as he captured the Rain delayed finale. Jim Bachmann gave chase to Sawyer only to later be disqualified for the evening for abuse to an Speedway Official. When the dust settled it was Clete Trimmer taking home the runner up money ahead of Honkin' Chris Oncken, Lonnie Retherford and Jim Kaczynski. Heat wins to Shane Leonard and Trey Almand
