Hialeah LMS 100 Goes to Winchell

by Marty Little

Using equal parts determination, persistance and track knowledge, veteran Joe Winchell battled into the lead on lap 85 and sped to the win in the Murray's Speed and Custom 100 for late model sportsman cars Saturday night at Hialeah Speedway.

Starting eighth in the 15 car field, Winchell quietly picked his way toward the front while pole sitter and fast qualifier Charlie Coyle began to put some distance on his pursurers. The first yellow flew on lap 22 when Danny Maddox and Richie Henry tangled on the front straight. Winchell took third from Gary McGoron on lap 24 and chased Ricky Rogero for second as Coyle continued to set a comfortable pace in his freshly redone Monte Carlo.

Rogero fell back on lap 33 with overheating problems and Winchell now had only Coyle ahead of him. On lap 55 Winchell and Coyle made contact in turn two with Coyle the spinner. Winchell was sent to the rear and Coyle retained the lead. Now the real excitement began as Winchell sliced his way through field again. By lap 72 Winchell was back to second but a flat tire two laps later sent him to the pits on a caution for new rubber as Coyle still maintained command. Winchell never lost a lap and rejoined the field at the rear f! or the second time in the event and the chase was on.

Coyle's mount was now ill-handling as he slowed slightly but still maintained the point. Winchell tore through the field, driving around Coyle on lap 85 and never looked back enroute to his first win of the season here. McGoron checkered second over Greg Kaouk, Craig Brown and Ritchie Holt.

Mike Orth pocketed the street stock top money with a good drive over Gary Padula and T.C. McElyea while Tommy Styer notched his sixth mini stock win on the season with an easy run over Bill Calder and Thomas Cepeda in the 25 lapper.

All it took was a car number change for George Morales to gain his first cyclone victory of the year in front of Robert Sark and Victor Leo and John Bentley topped a depleted field of pure stocks for his initial win this year in front of point leader Roger Bohannon and Frank Kelliher.

Complete finish of Murray's Speed & Custom 100 late model sportsman feature showing finishing position, driver and laps completed: 1. Joe Winchell 100; 2. Gary McGoron 100; 3. Greg Kaouk 100; 4. Craig Brown 100; 5. Ritchie Holt 100; 6. Clint Wasteney 98; 7. Bobby Shelton 98; 8. Richie Henry 95; 9. Frank Parzyck 90; 10. Charlie Coyle 87; 11. Danny Maddox 55; 12. Ricky Rogero 41; 13. Scott Crisafulli 32; 14. Stuart Robertson 28; 15. T.C. McElyea 20.
Lap leaders: Coyle 1-84, Winchell 85-100. Fast Qualfiier - Coyle 16.952.
