O'Lone Captures Outlaw Late Model Feature at Sunshine

by Bruce Hassy
Florida Motorsports Staff Writer

The Auto Trader Street Stocks put on a hard fought, bump and rub, 20 lap performance keeping fans on their feet at Sunshine Speedway Saturday night. Starting from the middle of the 24 car field, Dave Ochsenwald #60 took the lead on lap 16 after an Jeff Lacey spin and never gave it up.

The #50 car of James Ellershaw spun and collected Troy Meredith to bring out the first caution of the night on lap 4. The caution set up Lacey to pass pole sitter Jackie Ashley #72 on the inside in turn four. Lacey seemed to be in control of most of the race until a surprising spin in lap 16.

The spin gave Ochsenwald the top spot on the restart and pushed Lacey back to a 19th place finish. A true battle for third developed late in this race as Harold Ashley #27 made himself real big in the rearview mirror of #20 Earl Bowman. After riding Bowman's bumper for a few laps, Ashley made a move to the inside on lap 18 for the third spot and 2 of the top three spots to the Ashley family.

The street stock top five was Ocshenwald, J. Ashley, H. Ashley, Bowman and Mark Walters #92.

Open Wheel Modifieds

Darren Jackson #7d led all 25 laps of the Open Wheel Modified feature. The only challenger for the lead was the #88 of Chris Robbins. Robbins made his move early in lap 4 with a pass to the inside of John Gerstner in turn two for second. Robbins would hold on to the 2nd spot for the rest of the race but was the only driver with enough power to catch the leader.

After a lap 14 caution brought out by Butch Bassett #23 when he spun in turn three, Robbins peppered Jackson's bumper for the remainder of the race but could not get by. The only other movement in the top five took place on lap 22 when Chet Senokossoff with Chris Grisby #28 in tow passed Mike Hinegardner #51 for the 4th and 5th spots inside of turn three.

The OWM top five for Saturday night was Jackson, Robbins, Grisby, Senokossoff, and Glover.

Outlaw Late Models #20 Steve O'Lone held his breath and pulled off a great last turn pass to get the checkers in the Outlaw Late Model 20 lap feature.

After starting in the seventh spot, O'Lone patiently worked his way through the field to set up his last lap battle. Pole sitter Rick McMehan #15 had a great start and jumped out to the early lead. The only caution of the night came early as the #112 of Dave Cleary spun with a little help from Scott Holly #1 in turn 4 of lap 9.

Cleary hit the wall and was forced to bring his car to the garage. Holly was sent to the rear of the field for causing the spin. O'Lone made his way to 2nd by lap 12 with a nudge of the #27 car of Pete Coon at the start finish line and a quick pass outside of turn one. McMehan looking for his fist win in the M&M Motorsports machine was looking loose coming off the turns and allowed Jackson to close in.

Jackson was side by side for the last lap with McMehan until finally getting the front of the car by for the checkers coming out off turn four. The Outlaw top five was Jackson, McMehan, Rick Haugh #77, Ed Kidd #6 (working his way from the back of the field), and Coon.
