Wild Night at A-Dale

by Billie May
Auburndale Speedway had a regular night of racing Saturday night, with alot of tires flying and tempers too.

In the 4-cyl Bombers there was a first time winner in victory lane after their 15 lap feature event. David Jouppi # 1 started on the pole, with # 21 Keith Shirah on the outside front row, Jouppi took the lead early with Shirah falling in behind. Larry Chumney II # 96 went to the outside of # 3 Terry Jones for the third spot, they raced side-by-side for a couple laps then # 88 Darrell Ashmore Jr. and # 26 Chris Klumpp tangled in turn one but kept going. Jouppi still in front with Shirah second, then Jones in third, single file racing nose to tail as the top four bunch together. Leaders came into lapped traffic, the top four drivers splitting the lapped traffic, but everyone kept their positions and David Jouppi took his first win, with Shirah second and Jones rounding out the top three.

The V-8 Street Stocks had alot of drivers spinning out with alittle help from the drivers behind them, and some drivers not agreeing with the calls that were made after the fact. At the start # 17 Alex Abbott took the top spot, and a battle for the second spot between # 40 Mike Pitts and # 7 David Williams but Pitts made the pass and went into second, # 65 Brian Harbin went to the outside of Williams for the third spot. Jeff Davis # 25 and # 16 David Purvis get together and spin but both continue on. Jason Deaton # 99 went to the outside of # 32 David Holland to move him into the top five, Mike Wilson # 31 taps Holland but both were able to continue, then the next lap Wilson drives into Holland spinning him out, they both went to the rear. Restart Abbott still up front, Deaton makes a move for the fourth spot around Williams and # 51 Mark Lowe was challenging for fifth, meanwhile the leader Abbott fell off the pace handing the lead to Pitts, moving Brian Harbin to second, and dropping Abbott to third, while Brian Harbin running second, coming off of turn two he made contact with the leader and never let off the gas, spinning the leader out on the backstretch, caution came out and they put Harbin to the rear, and Pitts back in the lead, moving David Purvis into the top five but then he got tapped and spun by Lowe, caution came out, and Purvis was put back into fifth, and Lowe went to the rear. With only a couple laps to go the top three stayed the same and Mike Pitts went onto win, with Alex Abbott second, and third went to Jason Deaton. But after going through tech inspections, # 40 of Mike Pitts and # 99 of Jason Deaton were DQed, giving the win to # 17 Alex Abbott, and moving # 7 David Williams and # 16 David Purvis into the top three.

The Super Stock race was another wild and crazy 25 laps, with 16 cars starting the race. Jim Orisich # 08 and # 12 David Williamson were on the front row to take the green flag, they stayed side-by-side for a couple laps until Williamson on the outside made the pass, caution came out because # 14 Andy Dorman spun and # 97 Jammie Dunnahoe made contact with Dorman and got the left side sheet metal torn off of his car. Restart # 34 Jeff McCaw went to the inside of # 80 of Dustin Breeden for the fifth spot, then McCaw went to the inside of # 16 R.J.Williams for fourth and challenging # 13 Aaron Williamson for the third spot. Breeden went underneath Williams for the fifth spot meanwhile McCaw made the move on Aaron Williamson for third, with Breeden following dropping Aaron Williamson to fifth, R.J. Williams went around him moving him up to fifth. Caution for # 01 Chris Lewellen lost his tire coming out of turn two, hitting the wall pretty hard, but was alright. Restart with a fe! w laps to go, Breeden bumped McCaw coming off of turn two and got underneath him, but McCaw wasn't gonna let that go, and retreated, the two of them were rubbing and banging all the way down the backstretch, until they took each other out off the race with McCaw having the most damage, but with all of this going on, they were on the last lap and had other cars trying to improve their positions, they almost collected other cars into this "Battle of the Hotheads", the caution didn't come out because it was on the last lap, and Daivid Williamson took the win, with Jim Orisich second, and R.J. Williams third.

Mini-Stocks were ready with 14 cars taking the green. Burt Morse #88 took the top spot right at the start, with # 58 Wayne Weaver second, and # 97 Brian Dorer was running third, # 9 Robbie Storer went to the outside of # 01 Donnie Howell for fifth, caution # 60 Greg Valdez spun coming out of turn four and collected up # 90 Randy Storer, no major damage but his hood came loose and was flapping, he went into the pits for repairs. Restart Morse still up front Robbie Storer went around Dorer for the third spot, and # 77 Lee Davis went under Howell moving him into the top five. Storer still on the move, and took second from Weaver meanwhile, after moving into the top five Davis slowed on the track and caution came out. Restart Robbie Storer went to the outside to challenge for the lead but caution came out for # 67 Bo Davis tapped Greg Valdez and he spun in turn two. Restart again and Robbie Storer went to the outside again for the top spot with them side-by-side for a couple lap! s Storer took the lead, caution again # 41 Jerry Nichols spun, restart with single file racing for awhile until Dorer went to the inside of Weaver for third and # 66 Donnie Lockard and Howell followed moving Howell into the top five, with Robbie Storer being undefeated in this class since the start of the 2002 season, he took another win, with Burt Morse running a good race and finishing second (after hitting the pace truck in the heat race) and Brian Dorer third.

Limited Late Models had 11 cars ready to rumble, # 65 Ollie Harbin on the pole took the lead form the start, with # 21 Von Pope in second, caution for # 54 Steve Black spinning in turn two, restart Harbin up front and # 71 Dave Dunkin went under # 63 Wesley Bass for the sixth spot, single file racing Harbin had a big lead over Pope in second, then Dunkin fell off the pace and pulled in and caution came out. Restart Harbin still showing the way and took the win, Pope really loose coming out of the turns # 45 Sam Cressman kept trying the inside but Pope stayed in second and Sam Cressman third.

Next week had a 50 lap Mini-Stock race scheduled but was changed to a 50 lap Limited Late Model race, with the winner taking home 4 new tires, 2nd place 3 new tires, and 3rd place 2 new tires along with regular pay-out. Also scheduled is the Lakeland Auto Salvage Demo-Derby, and a figure-8 race, along with the regular classes of Mini-Stocks, V-8 Street Stocks, Super Stocks, 4-Cyl.
