Fox takes Limited Lates at Charlotte

by Danny Snow
The sky was clear, but the sound of that "Southern Thunder" rolled through Charlotte County Speedway Saturday night as the Best Coast Insurance Street Stocks took to the track for their twenty five lap feature with the #79 of Leigh Elliot on the pole. Bill Vandevender's and his #84 car may have started out in the twelfth spot, but by lap seven he had made the move to the front to take the lead. Vandevender held position to take the checkered flag with #56 Walt Korkiner in second and #42 Mike LeBeau in third.

Eleven Pure Stocks lined up for the next feature with #77 Dennis Hale on the pole. #3 John Boyer was holding a close second as #55 Conrad Molter moved into third place on lap nine. #3 Boyer made his move under #77 Hale on lap fourteen to take the lead. Lap twenty three saw #55 Molter unsuccessfully challenging for the lead, then ending up in a spin with #9 Taz Sidock. Both Molter and Sidock were in the rear for the restart. #3 Boyer held on for the win with #77 Hale in second and #68H John Hanuschik in third.

#78 Wayne Ashton sat on the pole for the Classic Cars and remained there throughout the twenty five lap race. #31 Keith Roberts hit the backstretch wall hard, moving a section of the concrete on the sixteenth lap, bringing out Prompt Towing for a ride back to the pits. Roberts was O.K., but his car was done for the night. #7 Bud Spencer had held second place for much of the race, but drifted too high going into turn two. #5 Jim Rahman seized the opportunity and drove under Spencer to take the position. #78 Ashton took the win with #5 Rahman in second and #7 Spencer in third.

The Cat Country 107 Limited Late Model thirty five lap feature got underway with #95 Richie Anderson on the pole. #88 Randy Fox took the lead on lap nine. #26 Leo Powley blew an engine on lap twenty and took a hard hit to the driver's door when the #2 of Kevin Brickley had no where to go. Powley was transported to the hospital for a precautionary checkup. Once the All Volunteer Broom Crew cleaned up the aftermath, #88 Fox was still on point for the restart. Fox held on for the win with #95 Anderson taking second and #107 Glenn Morris in third. #62 Buzz Martin took the Best Looking Car in the Limited Late Model division.

The Collier Electric Sportsman division ran the last feature of the night with #72 Johnny Casady on the pole for the start of the race. #100 Jim Keating took the early lead and was still out front for the restart after a lap five incident between the #38 of Ralph Goddard and the #40 of Jeremy Goddard. Jeremy was also sent to the hospital for a checkup. #9 Jerry Bryant dropped under #100 Keating on lap eight to take the lead with #22 Danny Yates following in second place. Yates took the lead on lap eighteen and held for the win with #9 Bryant in second and #76 Joe Reese in third.

We'd like to thank the Desoto Middle School Chorus for starting our night by singing the National Anthem. They did a great job. We hope you'll all join us next week when Budweiser presents the Twin "35" Open Wheel Modifieds. Two races, two purses, and two winners. Don't miss it!
