Greg Ward Wins Late Model Feature at Volusia Speedway Park

Hooked up was exactly what #241 Greg Ward proved to be
as he won the 30 lap feature with a strong field of
Late Models breathing down his neck. Ward's car was
fast in the heat race and faster in the feature. The
only mishap for Ward was when he got together with lap
traffic in turn 3 and ended up coming to rest on the
outside retaining wall, but he was able to fire and
retake his lead on the single file restart on lap 11.

Last week's winner #11 Roho Sims had a shot at the lead
several times but was unable to take the spot from Ward.
With only 10 laps to go Roho had trouble and lost several
spots ending up with a 5th place finish. The top spots
went to Ward, 88 Chris Vogel, 17 Joe Kump, 33 Bill Kopka,
and 11 Roho Sims.

It was another lst time win as #19 Kirk Bush won the B-
main feature, newcomer #12 Christina Davidson held on
for a second place finish.

It was anyone's guess as to who would win, with 4 lead
changes #46 Travis Gamble pulled it out with 2 wins in
a row for the new year.

Early in the race, #26 George Lane spun in turn 4 and
faced the field as they made it past his stopped race
car. A fierce battle ensued as #19 Joe Belkey wasn't
giving any slack to #18 Richard Price running second.
A strong third place #01 Jimmy Heffner was closing in
on Price for second. Another caution flew as #26 George
Lane and #7 James Strehle got together in turn 4. It was
a single file restart, Price dropped to the inside to
take the lead from Belkey but it didn't work until Belkey
had a tire go down and he had to give up letting Price
take the lead on lap 8. Price's lead was short lived
as he too had a tire problem. Price lost a tire in
turn 1 and he too put his car in the pits. Third place
#3 Tim Walters had a tire go down as well and the
caution came out to allow him to get his to the pits
safely.

As the clock ran down it looked like it would be #01
Jimmy Heffner in victory lane but on a white flag lap
tussle, #46 Travis Gamble got around Heffner and took
the feature win for his second consecutive win this
year.

Wray Shaffer who lead the entire race up to lap 14.
Lapped trafic go in the way. Shaffer and Varieka
split and Varieka was able to get a good lead and hold
onto it for the remaining 6 laps of the 20 lap feature.

After a win in the heat qualifying race, #8 John Blood
was able to win his first feature race leading it
green to checker and avoiding a serious mishap on lap
12.

On lap 2 the #77 of Shannon Cleveland seemed to have
engine problems andslowed on the back stretch but was
able to pick up speed however the leaders of Blood and
last week's winner #48 Deric Smith made it around him
putting him a lap down.

It proved to be a bad night for Smith as he got caught
up in a crash on lap 12 as #5 Chris Mark and #30
Rodney Alexander got together, Smith tried to "thread
and needle" but sustained damage to the front of his
race car, putting him into the pits to remove body
parts and restarting him in the rear of the pack.
