It's time to race!

March 17, 2002

FAN Appreciation Night at Volusia Speedway Park

It was Fan Appreciation night at the races, free to
everyone in the grandstands. The Fans appreciated every
minute of the most exciting dirt racing in the state. It
was good to be back, the grandstands were ful and the races
were great!!!

DeLand Truck Center Late Models- The race started off all
wrong as 4 of the top cars crashed on the front stretch
#4 Rick Singler, #88 Paul George, #7 Kent Corbin and #22
Brent Carlton. Carlton got together with #1 Wayne Shugart
and spun gathering up several cars.

On lap 10, #33 Bill Kopka had a tire go down and was forced
into the pits but not before the caution dropped. On the
restart #23 Lawton Michew got "tapped" and came to a stop
on the front stretch bringing out another caution. The
worst hit of the night came as #7 Kent Corbin lost it going
into one, the sound of the hit to the wall had the fans
on their feet and holding their breath until Corbin climbed
out of the car and finished 16th.

With 3 laps to go the caution fell as the #24 Scott Smith
spun in turn 2. #11 Roho Sims had the car to beat and
every caution drew the field up closer but no one had
what it took the lead from Sims as he took the win in
front of #6 Scott Singler, #07 David Clegg, #241 Greg
Ward, #23 Lawton Michew.

Travis Gamble. Gamble took the lead as #01 Jimmy Heffner
had his hood come loose in the right ront, Gamble got past
Heffner and never relinquished the lead.

It was another caution filled race and Heffner was one that
suffered as he lost it on his own in turn 3 & 4 but #51
Steve Oldaker who had a competitive car got tangled up and
hit the outside wall. Heffner headed into the pits,
Oldaker tried to stay out but finally retired his damaged
race car to the pits as well.

It was a shortened race, with only two minutes left on the
restart of lap 7. #19 Joe Belkey stayed tight to the
leader #46 Travis Gamble but was unable to take the lead.

Higgs and #11 Pat Varieka took the wins and started inside
and outside pole.

Strehle was able to make the start but had to call it
quits early and put his damaged racecar in the pits.

#74 Mike Lanich brought out the caution on lap 11 as he
slammed the front stretch wall.

Excitement grew as the white flag dropped and #23 Wray
Shaffer took third plce from #97 David Higgs and it was
#54 Tim Hughes taking a well deserved win. As the checker
flew so did the #54 of Bob Jones as he lost it and ended

guy after making it three in a row feature wins! With 19
cars on hand for the 1st race of the new season. Two
qualifying heats were run to set the field for the feature.
Deric Smith and #8b John Blood won their heat races putting
them on the front row for the feature and as it ended
they came across the finish line the same way.

Only one caution for two laps was thrown as #37 Steve
Buker suffered engine trouble and came to a stop in turns
3 & 4. #72 Dave Taulbee had trouble keeping his car going
the right direction but he was able to get going and never
brought out the caution.

It was #48 Deric Smith green to checker but the battle for

the way. #8 John Blood won out in the end taking second

wide but he was involved in a crash sending his car to
the pits. As the battle for second got heated #3 Ryan
Vanmsickle got together with #90 William Creech, was
unble to keep it together and continue in his position
but Creech spun and started in the rear for the restart.
