Raymond Jones Top Outlaw At Charlotte County

By Danny Snow

After a one-week delay due to rain, the sweet sound of Southern Thunder filled the air once again at the Charlotte County Speedway last Saturday night. Familiar faces were welcomed back, and new sponsors were welcomed aboard as the fans settled down for another great night of racing action.

Speaking of action, the Best Coast Insurance Street Stocks took to the track for the first feature of the night. Sixteen cars lined up for the green flag with #23 Frank Sanders on the pole. A four car pile up on lap one sent all four cars involved to the pits for minor repairs, but all were able to make it back out for the drop of the green. #84 Billy Vandevender took the lead on lap three and held on tight for the win. #23 Sanders came in second with #27 Terry Price in third. The Street Stocks Best Looking Car went to #84 Vandevender.

Twenty cars hit the track for the Collier Electric Sportsman thirty lap feature with #35 Calvin Fillingame on the pole. Raymond Jones, in the #8 car, took the lead on lap four. #76 Joe Reese and #91 Kay Jackson put on a good show for the fans with about eight laps of good clean side by side racing. #8 Jones held on for the win with #76 Reese in second and #91 Jackson in third. The Sportsman Best Looking Car went to #38 Ralph Goddard.

The Outlaw Modifieds twenty-five lap feature got underway with #4 Bill Mattress on the pole. Before the end of the first lap, it was #67 C. J. Haycraft out in front. By lap eight #41 Raymond Jones, who also ran in the Sportsman division, was challenging for the lead, and took it on lap nine. #5 Ted Hoverson and #41 Jones raced hard for the last ten laps of the race as Hoverson shadowed Jones trying to take the lead. #41 Jones managed to hold him off and take the win with #5 Hoverson in second and #67 Haycraft in third.

The CLW Construction Open Wheel Modifieds were up next for their feature with #25 Scott Kleiber on the pole. It was thirty-five laps of clean and green racing as the eleven cars made their way around the track. #25 Kleiber stayed out front for the win with #6 Kevin Williams in second and #12S Joe Sumasky in third. The Open Wheel Best Looking Car went to #6 Kevin Williams.

#22 John Garrett had the pole for the Thunder Truck twenty lap feature. Garrett moved out with a commanding lead early in the race. By lap six #2 Gene Pack had moved up from eighth place and into third. A caution on lap nine bunched up the pack and when the green flag dropped again it was #2 Pack out in front. #22 Garrett dropped off the pace and went to the pits with engine trouble. #2 Pack held the lead for the win with #37 Cheryl Weaver in second and #8 Mike Bialecki in third. The Thunder Trucks Best Looking Truck went to #37 Cheryl Weaver.

The W. E. Johnson Road Warriors ran the final feature of the night with #46 Allen Collins on the pole of the twenty-five lap race. Fifteen year old Ander Jackson took the lead on lap four in the #91 car but lost it to #0 Cletus Trimmer on lap nine. By lap thirteen Trimmer, Jackson, and #61 Chris Oncken were getting into lapped traffic. Lap twenty-one saw Oncken take over second place, then a caution on lap twenty-two bunched up the pack for a three lap shoot out. #0 Trimmer held for the win with #61 Oncken in second and young #91 Jackson in third. The Road Warriors Best Looking Car went to #30 Chris Huntoon.
