T.B.A.R.A. Sprints Top Hialeah Show

By Marty Little

Veteran Jimmy Alvis blasted from his front row starting position then held off the pressure from Shane Butler to win Saturday night's 25 lap Tampa Bay Area Racing Assn sprint car feature at Hialeah Speedway.

While Alvis was quickly building a lead around the flat third-mile oval, young Butler was slicing his way through the dozen car field until he caught the leader on lap 18 and the race was on. Alvis never faltered despite Butler looking both inside and out and held his line for the win, his first in several seasons in the winged cars. Butler claimed runner-up honors over new points leader Dude Teate, Matt Mercer and Wayne Reutimann.

Jeff Bode topped a good field on street stocks to claim the 25 lap main event. Chad Rutherford and Gary Padula each lead but both ended up crashing as Bode notched his first win in a year. Travis McCoy, T.C. McElyea, Craig Seewald and Ken Ammerman rounded out the top five runners.

Mini stock action saw Tommy Styer continue his domination of the four cylinder cars as he took the lead on lap two and never looked back, easily outdistancing rookie Chase Goodson, Bill Calder, Richard Thomas and Ray Lanes in the 20 lap run.

Once again Roger Bohannon proved to be the best of the very competitive 25 lap cyclone feature as he got the lead on the 24th lap for the win over Chad Orth, George Morales, Bruce Moerlins and Victor Leo.

Other winners were Frank Kelliher in the pure stocks, Mike Harrison in the super mini cups and Theresa Joslin topped the ladies in the powder puff.
