It's time to race!

February 16, 2002

Danny Johnson, Rick Eckert, Scott Drake Winners at VSP 2/16

It was #24 Rick Eckert, York, PA all the way tonight as
he qualified fastest and led all the laps. Eckert was
able to hold off two time winner #71 Don O'Neal,
Martinsville, IN. They were smokin' some tires and
hanging on tight as they made their way around the l/2
dirt oval at Volusia Speedway Park.

Eckert put his machine out front and there was lap traffic
between him and O'Neal for several laps. The caution
was dropped on lap 23 as the #23 Greg Johnson spun in
turn 4. Eckert could taste a win and he wasted no time
getting and staying out front of the fastest Super Late
Models in the country. It was Eckert, O'Neal, Babb,
Pearson, and Mars in the top spots when the checker flew.
Fast time was also set by #24 Rick Eckert, York, PA
18.030 not the high l7's as it's been in the past few
nights. A tie for 10th place between #18b Shannon Babb,
Moweaqua, IL and #96 Terry English, Whiteland, IN with
the time of 18.411. The top 10 are locked in for the
feature and with the tie for 10th place tonight, it was
the top 11 making the feature on their times.

One caution after another made it feel like a 100 lapper
but in the end it was green to checker for #27 Danny
Johnson, Rochester, NY. #74 J.R. Heffner, Averill Park,
NY didn't ease up but he couldn't get past Johnson.
Last nights winner #3 Bret Hearn made his way through
cautions and lap cars but just didn't have what it took
to get the lead from Johnson and ended up with a 4th
place finish.

A crash on lap 8 restart took out several cars, no one
was hurt but the damage to the cars was enough to
cause a lenthy caution as the cars parked on the front
stretch under red. Bob McCreadie was in the field with
a different car since he flipped his car last night.
McCreadie drove the #45 and didn't have a very good
night finishing 19th.

As they get ready for their final 50 lap race on Saturday
night, it's #3 Bret Hearn leading the points 212, #74
J.R. Heffner - 204, and previous leader #1m Tim Fuller
third with 186 points due to a 27th place finish after
spinning on the backstretch in the middle of the race.

It was their final race of Raceweek 2002 and what a
show #12d Scott Drake, Muskogee, OK had to fight his way
to a well deserved win. After a couple cautions it was
a lap 7 restart that saw Missouri's finest leading the
pack as #11 Bryan Collins, Elsberry, MO, 17 Jim Shereck,
St. Charles, MO, 1w Ray Walsh, St. Louis, MO flew past
the packed grandstands. They may start the race single
file but by turn one you can bet these open wheel
monsters are side by side and sometimes three wide and
tonight that was the case.

#11 Bryan Collins seemed to have the car to beat for the
first part of the 30 lap finale. Drake kept a steady
bumper to Collins for several laps letting him know
he was there and one wrong move he'd take him. Drake
suffered some minor sheet metal damage but that didn't
stop him from making a "my oh my" move. Drake made
his move on lap 26 blasting past Collins and leading
the way for 2 time winner #17 Jim Shereck to follow him
to the second position but Shereck couldn't get past
Collins and ended up with a third place finish behind
Drake and Collins.

In other notes of tonight, U.M.P. Modified events, weight
got another driver tonight as the qualifing win of
#77 Johnny Sullivan, Atwood, TN in the first heat was
dq'd when his car was found light at the scales following
the race. The line up was determined by acheivements
from the past weeks racing and U.M.P. points. There
were 4 heats in the U.M.P. Open Wheel Modifieds and
the top two from each heat was guaranteed a start in
the feature. The winners from the past weeks were
guaranteed a spot as well, if a driver won more than one
feature the second place finisher was guaranteed a spot.
#17 Jim Shereck, St. Charles, MO was the only two time
winner therefore the second place finisher on the night
of his second win transferred into the feature race. The
drivers that were guaranteed a starting spot ran a 6
lap dash race to determine their line up position,
#11z Bryan Collins, Elsberry, MO won the dash race giving
him the pole for the feature.
