It's time to race!

February 16, 2002

The Pressure is On as Night 8 is in the Books at NSS

Two Super Late Model heat races were run with the top 8
transferring into the main feature race. That alone will
tell you how many Super Lates are in the pits at New
Smyrna Speedway. Crews have worked their fingers to the
bones getting these cars faster, up to speed, to make
the 100 lap feature race tonight. On the pole for Friday's
night 30 lap feature was #37 James Powell. Powell was
able to lead a portion of the race in spite of the two
cautions before the first lap was ever on paper.

The first caution came out from the spin out of one
of the cars coming off turn 2. Coming around with
damage to his hood and front end was #74 Barry Willoughby.
Willoughby eventually had to pull off the track. Also
the #7 of Eric Darnell suffered front end damage and
raced without a hood for the remaining 30 laps. The
field was realigned, the green was shown, and seven
cars piled up going into turn 1. The #7x of Matt
Griffin and the #71 of Lee Faulk suffered the most
damage with Griffin going under the Faulk car's fuel
cell. This caused the red to come out.

Once the track was cleaned, the cars cleared, it was
race time again. Powell lead the pack with Clay
Rogers, Freddie Query, Jr. Hanley and Jimmy Cope right
on each other's bumpers. As Cope and Kittleson fight
for the same spot and Cope takes it, the yellow is
thrown for a spin on the backstretch. At this point,
#74 Barry Willoughby, pulls the Pennzoil machine off
the track.

On the restart, it is Powell and Query side by side with
Query taking the lead (something he has not done this
entire 8 nights). But as fast as Query takes it, the
next time by he is off the track with mechanical problems
giving the lead back to #37 Powell. By this time Powell
has Jr. Hanley, Jimmy Cope and Travis Kittleson and Clay
Rogers behind him. Kittleson and Rogers duke it out for
the fourth spot with Kittleson finally taking it.

Lap 15 sees the yellow once again as the #14 spins. On the
restart, #61 tries to shake the #66 of Hanley but Hanley
is not to be shaken. Hanely makes a smooth move and actually
touches Powell but Powell is able to maintain and Hanley
has the lead. If there was any space between these two
cars as Hanley goes by Powell, it was not to be seen.
One more caution comes out, for debris on the track, and
when the green flies it is Hanley, Cope, Kittleson,
Powell and Clay Rogers leading the pack.

On the last lap coming to the finish line, the #56 of
Mike Staggs spins just as Hanley is taking the win.
Mike shows the crowd what donuts are and gives everyone
a good show even though he was not the winner. Hanley
wins night 8 with #61 Jimmy Cope, #88 Travis Kittleson,
#37 James Powell, #2x - Clay Rogers, #09 - Randy
Gentry, #47 - Louie Mechalides, #36 - Dan Fredrickson,
#82, #11 David Rogers and #52 Chris Wimmer.

I apologize but I did not have a rooster for the Allison
Legacy cars but it was the #20 on the pole and winning
from the pole. Following #20 across the finish line
were the #27, #11, #1 -Eric Darnell, and #15. Will
try and get rooster for tonight.

Larry Osteen #22 (who walked the wall on night 4) was
back with his #22 and sat on the pole. But right
beside Larry was the #15 of Jason Boyd who is trying
to be the first driver ever to win all 9 nights of his
feature race. Needless to say with only one caution
in this race, Boyd took the lead and never had anyone
to challenge him for it. Following Boyd across the
finish line were #63 DeWayne Bryan, #5x Gery Artuso,
#38 Kirk Hooker, #26 Mike Murphy and #22 Larry Osteen.

The NASCAR Tour Type/SK Mods had their 100 lap feature
with #34 David Berghman on the pole. The #14 of Rob
Summers quickly jumped from third to second and was
chasing down Bergman when the yellow was flown on lap
6 for the #1 of Jamie Tomaino Jr., #3 Jeff Malave
and #12 John Cambra. The #1 is pushed onto pit road
for the crew to attend and the #3 is pouring smoke
and had to wait for pit road to be opened. On the
restart, #34 is still in the lead but it is #5 Charlie
Pasteryak and #13 Ted Christopher giving the fans
that side by side action they love. Eventually
Christopher takes the sixth position putting Pasteryak
to seventh. Christopher sets his eye on the fifth
spot which #2 JR BBertuccio claims as his. JR holds
keeping Christopher at his back door. This allows
Berghman to stretch his lead over Eric Beers who is
all alone in the second spot. This left the #00,
#2 Bertuccio, #13 Christopher, #5 Pasteryak, #32
chasing each other in their own pack.

Lap 25 saw a caution as a car hits the turns 1 and 2
wall and just as the #14 of Summers takes the lead
from the #34. On the restart, the #14 Summers gets
a good lead over the #34 with Pasteryak #5, #32,
#28 Holdridge, and #99 Tomaino shuffling for
position. Lap 67 the #41 of Gary Swainder spins
going into turn 4 with several cars spinning to miss
Swainder. All cars were fine and pulled away to
continue to race. At this point, pit stops were
made. The #19 Eric Beers choses not to pit putting
him in the lead position along with the #00 of Blewitt
who also did not pit. The #5 of Charlie Pasteryak
and the #2 of JR Bertuccio exit pit road first and
puts them in the top five. On the restart,
Beers #19 is able to hold the lead but with fresh
tires, the #99 of Tomaino passes the #00 for second
and sets his eyes on #19 Beers for the lead. Christopher
#13 has smoke and goes into the pits. Then it was
a free for all shotout with Beers and Charlie Pasteryak #5
who passes Tomaino #99 for second spot. But tonight
belonged to the #14 of Summers who takes the lead over
and wins the 100 lap event. Following Summers was
Charlie Pasteryak #5, Eric Beers #19, Jamie Tomaino #99,
JR Bertuccio #2, #34 David Berghman, #32, #00, and #29.

Jerry Symons #66, winner of 7 out of 8 nights of FL/IMCA
Mod racing, sat on the pole for their 20 lap feature.
Beside Symons was the #2x of Jason Boyd. Symons wastes
little time in taking the lead over Boyd and keeping it
throughtout the race. The first yellow came out for
the spin of the #4 in turns 1 and 2. The race was
red flagged when the #21 hit the backstretch pit all
and the #15x was black flagged for a pit crew member
coming over the wall while under the red flag. The
track was cleared and the green was out until lap
16 when the #16 of Justin Henderson spins coming out
of turn 4. Symons is still leading the way with Boyd
#2x, #51 Dave Stacy, #00 Bobby Blake and #lA Andy
Saffotti in the top five. The #31 of Charlie Gall spins
bringing out the caution one more time. Just as
the #1A Saffotti takes over the third place spot, the
#16 of Henderson spins coming off turn 4. Before the
yellow was thrown, the #69 hits the #16 straight in
the passenger side door causing both cars to spin more.
Both drivers were fine in spite of the fact that the
#16 was hit so hard that it actually moved his head
restraint to the side and bruised his neck. The
cars were cleared and Symons take the win. Following
Symonds was the #2x Jason Boyd, #1A Andy Saffotti,
#51 Dave Stacy, #00 Bobby Blake, #3 Wayne Parker, #Kl
Mike Carroll, 5x Gery Artuso, and #7 Mark Vandevender.

On the pole for the Sportsman Feature race was the #17
of Bill Loomis. But Loomis was not strong enough to
hold off the hard charging #7 Rick Johns. Once Johns
got the lead, there was no catching him. Crossing
the finish line behind Johns was the #17 Bill Loomis,
#62 Randy Hecker, #28, #31 Paul, #98 Kenny Hellyer,
#32 Jimmy Elliott, Jr., #74, #63 Dale Howard,
#69 Jim Foley and #18 Ken Lewton.
