Don O'Neal Claims Win in U.M.P. Super Late Model Feature at VSP on Night 5

They don't call them Super for nothing! The U.M.P. Super
Late Models had a two time winner and a big winner over
all this February. #71 Don O'Neal, Martinsville, IN has
been "smokin" em here in Florida all month and he's doing
the same at Volusia Speedway Park.

81 cars tried to make the field tonight and the #97 Terry
English from Whiteland, IN set fast time 17.866 but was
unable to make the cut and run the feature race.

#38 Kenny Pettyjohn, Millsboro, DE sat on the pole and
held on to that position for several laps as #21m
Billy Moyer, Batesville, AR tried high and low but
was unable to make his way to the front of the field.
#15b Brian Birkhofer, Muscatine, IA held him off until
lap 17 when #71 O'Neal made his move, going high he
blew past Birkhofer and Moyer and set his sights on race
leader #38 Pettyjohn and on the next lap by #71 O'Neal
was out in front for the rest of the race.

The U.M.P. Open Wheel Modifieds saw a two time winner
tonight as the strong car of Jim Shereck, #17 out of
St. Charles, MO, visited Victory Lane for two nights
in a row.

In the beginning laps of the race it seemed as though
the wall in turn 4 was the place to be as #87 Eddie
Harmon, Ironton, OH and #88 Chad Wheeler both skimmed
the wall. The first of two cautions was on lap 10
as front runner #74 Scott Nesteby, Asbury, IA went
around on the back stretch by himself and came to rest
on the inside wall. #37 Ron Barker, Dubuque, IA had
the car to be in the early laps of the race, #71 Bill
Davis, Chesterton, IN worked his way up but could not
get around Barker for the top spot.

Then it was Shereck all the way as he blasted past the
leaders on lap 11 after the restart and never looked
back.

Lap 12 saw the final caution of the night as #12D Scott
Drake, Muskogee, OK lost it going into turn 1 and #45m
Jim Mills, Marshall, IL, #87 Eddie Harmon and #1 Bart
Richardson, Bradford, TN all got together to avoid Drake
in turn 1. The #4g Gary Clark, Walker, MO, a front
running car had a rough start to the race in 18th but
by lap 17 Clark was up to 4th and went on to finish in
the 4th spot. But it was #17 Joe Shereck all the way
with the win, his second of raceweeks 2002.

1r Bart Richardson, Bradford, TN (23) 33 Steve Wetter,

It was their first feature of Raceweeks and #m1, Tim
Fuller, Edwards, NY took the win on the last lap as
race leader, #45 Keith Hoffman, Whitehall, PA went
high and cut a right rear tire on the white flag lap.

26 out of 34 cars took the green flag for their 30 lap
feature race. #45 Hoffman had the pole and race winner
#m1 Fuller started right behind him on row two inside.
#20 Tony Stewart had a rough first night as he started
14th and with one problem after another, pulled off
the track on lap 14 finishing 22nd for the night.

#3 Brett Hearn, Sussex, NJ was the one on the move. Hearn
started 20 and dropped back almost to the rear on the
first few laps but he gathered it up and by l/2 way Hearn
was in ninth and ended up finishing in the top 10 in
the 8th position.

Another one to watch was the #74b Dave Blaney out of
Sharon, PA, he had a strong car and challenged
several cars making his way to the front and finishing
2nd.

The big disappointment of the night was for #45 Hoffman
with a strong car he was driving it hard into the turns
smoke everywhere from the body of the car rubbing but on
the white flag lap, Hoffman went high at the flagstand,
cut a rear tire and was done for the night ending with
an 18th place finish. Fuller and Blaney wasted no time
passing Hoffman and battled for the top spot but when
the green and checker were thrown it was Fuller in
Victory Lane.
