Ted "Mr. Mini-Stock" Vulipus Crowned Mini-Stock Champion on Night 5 | Night five of the World Series of Asphalt Racing saw thirty six Super Lates in the field for their 30 lap feature race. On the pole for tonight's events was James Powell #37. But as fast as the green came out so did the yellow for a pile-up on the frontstretch involving the #27, #03, #47, #79 and #68. The field was realigned and once again the green was thrown. Powell #37 and the Re/Max Challenge Rookie of the Year #36 Dan Fredrickson were side by side for the lead position as the caution came out again for a car with a fire. The car was towed in and the field was realigned for a single file restart. The #36 of Fredrickson quickly jumped to the lead just as the #66 of Hanley came off the track for mechanical problems. Freddue Query #8 and Jimmy Cope #61 were having their own battle for the third position with Cope finally taking it by lap 9. #84 Wayne Anderson also pulled off the track at this time with mechanical problems.
The race was restarted with Cope #61 and Powell #37 door to door now for the second place spot. Lap 16 saw a caution for the #47T of Ryan Moore who hit the frontstretch wall and was towed into the pits. Once again Powell #37 and Cope #61 were door to door for the second place spot with Cope taking it before the yellow came out for the blown motor of the #90 Bob Fox. The race was restarted with Fredrickson, Cope, Powell, Query, Kittleson filling the top five spots. Larry Gelinas #371 and B.J. McLeod #78 are going side by side as McLeod gets loose but does a very good save and Gelinas spins and hits the backstretch wall which brings out a red flag. This is lap 27, only 3 laps remaining. The track is cleared and the fans are set to see a three lap shoutout. Fredrickson maintains his lead and wins his first race in the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car racing. Following Fredrickson were Jimmy Cope #61, James Powell #37, Travis Kittleson #88, Chris Wimmer #62, Clay Rogers #2x, Matt Hagan #9, B.J. McLeod #78, and Randy Gentry #09.
The NASCAR Tour Type/SK Mods had two features tonight, one from their rainned out feature from Sunday night. Eric Beers #19 sat on the pole for the makeup feature and won from the pole. Beers was able to hold the number one spot in spite of a number of restarts from caution flags. Following Beers across the finish line were Nevin George #11, Rob Summers #14, Charlie Pasteryak #5 and #32.
In their second feature, Jamie Tomaino #99 sat on the pole and lead for the first 11 laps until the caution came out for the #11 of Nevin George who spun. On the restart it was Tomaino #99 and Pasteryak #5 going door to door for the lead as the caution came out for a pile up coming out of turn 4 of the #2, #11 and #29. On the restart Pasteryak jumped to the lead only to be stopped by a red flag on lap 14. As the green was thrown for the restart, the yellow was thrown for the #88 who spun in the turn 4 wall. As the race went green once again, it was Tomaine #99 and Ted Christoper #14 now fighting for the second place position. Christopher takes the second place spot and Tomaino is shuffled back to fourth just as the caution comes out again for the #08 who spun coming out of turn 4. The race remained green after that with Pasteryak holding the lead in spite of Christopher being right on his bumper. The top five were: Charlie Pasteryak #5, Ted Christopher #13, Rob Summers #14, Jamie Tomaino #99, and #32.
The STARS were next up for the night. STAR (Senior Tour Auto Racers) race in New Hampshire, Maine, Mass., Connecticut, Maryland and have a full schedule and are well liked. The second group of antique cars were the Flatheads which have Sportsman and Modifieds in their group. They race them together but always give separate trophys to each division. Their club comes from Virginia and the Carolinas. On the pole was the #6 of James Rogers (Ridgeway, VA) a modified. Rogers jumped to the lead on the green but it was the #53 of Tim Brown (King, NC) also a modified, taking the lead over. Brown maintained the lead throughout the race with Rogers second, #550 (not part of this club), #16 Wayne Tuttle (King, NC) a sportsman, #55 Carlton Pugh (Gretna, VA) sportsman, #15 Kenneth Tuttle (King, NC) a sportsman.
Waylon Flynn #6x sat on the pole for the final Mini- Stock race for the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing. But it was the #55 of Rick Tumey who quickly jumped to the lead and maintained it for his first win in the five nights of Mini-Stock racing. Scott Reeves #11, Ted Vulipus #71 and Flynn #6x battled for the second place spot but it was Reeves #11 who kept it. Vulipus #71 did take over third putting Flynn #6x in fourth. Ron Debeau #4 filled out the top five. After the races, Ted "Mr. Mini-Stock" Vulipus was given the giant trophy for the Champion of the Mini-Stock division for the 2002 World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.
Jason Boyd #2x sat on the pole for the Open Wheel Modified race but it was Tank Tucker #17 who lead almost the entire race. Jerry Symons #66 and #1 Stephen Johanneck put on a show going door to door for the second place spot. On lap 13, Symons claimed the second place spot when Johanneck spun on the backstretch and was sent to the rear. This left Tucker and Symons do what they do best, race each other close. Symons tried to shake Tucker but Tucker was not to be shaken from that number one spot. After a caution for Mark Vandevender #7 who spun, Tucker pulled the #17 into the pits with mechanical problems. This gave the lead to Symons who went on to win his fourth race of the nine nights. Following Symons was Jason Boyd #2x, Bobby Blake #00, Jared Allison #18 and Bob Bauer #2.
Kirk Hooker #38 sat on the pole for the Late Model feature and actually got to lead a few laps before the #15 of Jason Boyd took the lead and never looked back. Boyd has won every race so far and is coming off a 3 night winning streak during SpeedFest at Lakeland's USA International. Joey Miller #5 did a really good job of trying to shake Boyd's tree and actually got him just alittle but Boyd was not to be shaken.
