Don O'Neal Captures U.M.P. Super Late Model Win at VSP

The #71 of Don O'Neal from Martinsville, IL took the
first feature win on the first night of racing for the
U.M.P. Super Late Models at Volusia Speedway Park.

The ground shaking power of these Super Late Models
from all over the U.S. shook the stands as they fired
in turn 4. Polesitter #26 Jimmy Mars, Elk Mound, WI
while O'Neal was outside Mars for the green flag. By
lap 3 O'Neal was leading the race and it was the first
caution of the feature thrown for the #18 of Shannon
Babb from Moweaqua, IL as he spun in turn 1.

Local driver from Ocala, #2l Ivendent Lloyd got a shot
at the feature when qualifying #12 Rick Aukland from
Zanesville, OH neglected to bring his car across the
scales disqualifying him from the feature. Lloyd held
it together after a mishap on the track but put his car
in the pits by lap 14.

It was #71 O'Neal all the way as he never lifted and kept
his car out front and by lap 15 it was hard to tell where
the field started and ended as O'Neal started passing the
rear of the pack.

The battle was on between #24 Rick Eckert, York, PA and
#21 Billy Moyer, Batesville, AR as they fought side by
side. #28 Mars got pinched up high and was out of the
race after skimming the front stretch wall. Tight 3
wide racing for the last 5 laps of the race. Eckert
and Moyer fought for 2nd place but it was Eckert taking
2nd, Moyer taking third, #6m Wendall Wallace, Batesville,
AR and #64 Dan Leatherman, Muskogee, OK taking 4th and
5th.

It was shear open wheel excitement as Volusia Speedway
Park's packed stands watched another winner take the
checker, it was the #17s Jim Shereck from St. Charles, MO
taking his first win of raceweeks 2002.

Green flag and caution flew simultaneously as #88 W Chad
Wheeler from Muskogee, OK spun in turn 1. It looked like
everyone checked up and Wheeler couldn't keep it straight.
A total restart and another caution as #87 Eddie Harmon,
Ironton, OH lost it going into turn 2. On lap two as the
cars came out of turn 4 the #3 Jason Schueler's front end
was airborne and covering the left side of #75 Dusty Moore,
Swanton, OH, no problem though as these seasoned drivers
kept their cars from getting together and causing damage,
they just drove the wheels off of them!

It was definitely #17 Schereck's night as he led the entire
race and avoided any of the trouble plaguing several of
the drivers. #74n Scott Nesteby, Asbury lA spun by himself
in turn 4 and had a face full of cars as the field passed
him while he was turned around.

By lap 8, it looked like #45max Brandon Maxwell, Milan, TN
may have had something for the #17 but Schereck kept
pace and never let him get a chance at the top spot. In
the beginning of the 25 lap feature #71 Bill Davis,
Chesterton, IN starting 3rd row inside and making his way
up a few spots seemed to suffer mechanical problems and
drifted back to 8th place and staying there until the
checker.

On lap 16 #37b Ron Barker, Dubuque, IA and #75 Dusty
Moore, Swanton, OH got together and brought out the
caution giving everyone another shot as the field
closed up for the restart but #17 Schereck was just
too fast and strong for #45 Maxwell to get by him.

The worst wreck of the race was #87 Eddie Harmon as he
spun, hit the outside wall in turn 3 and lost a tire,
retiring his car for the remaining 8 laps of the race.
On the restart #7t Jeremy Tibben, Red Oak IA was
smokin' as he gave it his all to hold on to the 3rd
spot and keep #1 Bart Richardson, Bradford, TN from
passing him, he succeed and it was #17 Schereck across
the line first, #45 Maxwell, #7 Tibben, #1 Richardson,
and #12d Scott Drake, Muskogee, OK in the top five spots.
