It's time to race!

January 20, 2002

Kevin Durden takes Hobby Stock Win, Brent Chilson takes Late Model Win and Scott Carlson Takes Home the Big Money at VSP

Barberville,FL - It was a little cooler at Volusia Speedway
Park, but the crowd hung in there for some ground pounding
racing action! The night started with Consi "consolation"
races for the Hobby Stocks, then it was the Late Model
heats and the features began.

Hobby Stocks ran 2 - 10 lap consi races with the top 4
out of each going to the feature.
Consi 1 - #01 Jimmy Heffner had the pole and finished
first in the 10 lap consi race. The top 4 were: #01
Jimmy Hefner, #8 Regie Jones, #54 Tim Hughes, #99 Kim
Floyd.

Consi 2 - #46 Trevor Gamble had the pole and finished
second in the second 10 lap consi race. The top 4 were:
#98 Jody Knowles, #46 Trevor Gamle, #93 Craig Montesi,
#2c Jeremy Cline.

Hobby Stock Feature: 100 laps of clean fast racing and
it was pole sitter #56 Kevin Durden taking the win and
the big money!

The first 25 cautions were going to be counted but as it
stood, they ran so good it was clean and green until
the last 10 when they had to run them all under green.
One of the few cautions of the night came out when #19
Joe Belkey went up in smoke in turn 2 with what seemed
to be a blown motor.

The battle between local driver #54 Tuck Trentham and
#4 Wally Fowler went on for the first 50 laps and by
halfway #54 Trentham had the leadand #56 Kevin Durden
was right behind him and on lap 51 #56 Durden took the
lead and never let go.

The worst caution of the night was on lap 82 as #51
Steve Oldaker drifted high and climbed the outside
retaining rail in turns 3 and 4 ending up on top of
the rail and over on his roof outside the track. Within
seconds the safety crew were right there and they
uprighted the car. Steve climbed out of the car and
walked away...alot has to be said about the safety of
the race cars and the safety crew's quick reaction to
the situation.

Top 10: (1) #56 Kevin Durden (2) #54 Tuck Trentham (3)
#0 Billy Bishop (4) #4 Wally Fowler (5) #65 John Mamph
(6) #21 John Taylor (7) #58 Dave Buttrum (8) #54 Tim
Hughes (9) #42 Douglas Sipps (10) #15 Alan Peacock

STREET STOCKS didn't run a consi race, everyone that
entered made the 100 lap, $5,000 to win feature. #1M
Dave Kinsey had the pole but didn't have a good night
but the #XX of Scott Clarkson made it through several
setbacks to take the win and the $5,000.

To keep the race a race and not a race under caution
only the first 25 caution laps were counted from then
on it was green and cautions didn't count. By lap 57
the 25 cautions had been run. #6 Robert Sandifer
started his night out with a spin and ended up in
several before his night was over.

The worst caution of the night was on lap 20 when
#88 Chris Byle and #69 Bobby Layman got together
in turns 3 and 4 but that wasn't the worst of it..
as #88 Byle sat still and the caution was out #73
Rick Swank and #31 Kevin Terry connected with his
race car causing fatal damage to his race car and
ending his night on the track.

At the halfway point it was #lM David Kinsey, #XX
Scott Clarkson, #23 Toby Sims, #22 Joe Baker and
#57 EJ Wise in the top 5 but in turn 1 #XX Clarkson
and #23 Sims got together and spun. Both cars
were put to the rear. It was green until lap 57
when #6 Sandifer and #XX Clarkson spun putting both
to the rear.

On lap 62, 2001 Points Champion #22 Joe Baker took the
lead from #lM Kinsey but by lap 68 #57 EJ Wise made
it around #22 Baker. #lM Kinsey had a flat and ended
up in the pits on lap 76.

Through it all it was #XX Scott Clarkson winning the
feature in front of the remaining 11 of 26 cars on the
track.

TOP TEN: (1) #XX Scott Carlson (2) #57 EJ Wise (3) #23
Toby Sims (4) #22 Joe Baker (5) #74 Raymond Wheeler (6)
#69 Bobby Layman (7) #88 Billy Wright (8) #48 Steve
Lowrey (9) #6 Robert Sandifer (10) #3 Bobby Johal.

LATE MODEL: 18 cars took to the track and local driver
#99 Brent Chilson took his 4th win of his career. Heat
race winner #07 David Clegg didn't give it to Chilson
he was on him hard for the entire 30 laps. A battle
for 3rd and 4th was back and forth for several laps
as 2001 Point Champion #88 Paul George tried to get
under or around #11 Roho Sims but just couldn't make
it happen. #11 Sims took third. In "amongst" them
was #17 Pat Williams trying to take both of them but
when the checker flew he ended up 4th while #41 Mark
Davis from Georgia took 5th and #88 Paul George was
6th.

TOP TEN: (1) #99 Brent Chilson (2) #07 David Clegg (3)
#11 Roho Sims (4) Patrick Williams (5) #41 Mark Davis
(6) #88 Paul George (7) #68 Trapper Boettcher (8) #23
Lawton Minchew (9) #33 Bill Kopka (10) #44 Ronnie
Grubbs.

The next race at Volusia Speedway Park will kick off
