Snodgrass Takes Late Model Win, Castello Takes First Win at New Smyrna Speedway | The grandstands of New Smyrna Speedway were filled last night with racefans for the Orange Blossom 100 which was won by Travis Kittleson followed by Jack Cook, David Rogers, B.J. McLeod and Barry Willoughby. But besides the main event, there were feature races in all divisions.
First out to run were the Open Wheel Modifieds. You may think you were seeing double but there were two no. 7's. One driven by regular driver Mark Vandevender and the other by Geoff Marquand. But the side by side action was between the #7 of Mark Vandevender and the #2 of Skip Honaker. Both these cars touched in turn 1 as Honaker was going for the lead from Vandevender and sent to the rear to come back up and take first and second spot. Vandevender won in the end followed closing by Skip Honaker, Geoff Marquand, #40, and the #88 of Paul Duncan.
On the pole for the Mini-Stock divisoin was the #81 of James McCague who won the Race for Kids Sake Mini Stock race. McCague had problems with the #81 and on the restart it was the #8 of Trish Gray on the pole. But Gray was tapped in the rear by the #9 of Dale Casteel and before she could straighten the car was put in the wall by the #31 of Chad Carpenter. Then it was David Castello in his #US1 Mini Stock taking his first win at New Smyrna Speedway. Once Castello got to the front, there was no catching him. Castello was followed by the #9 of Dale Casteel, #v3 of Rex Christenson, and the #07 of Dick Lazlo.
The Late Model division saw the #90 of Robert Anderchek on the pole but it was the #22 of Dave Snodgrass leading the way for the win. There was a good battle between the #22 of Larry Osteen and the #96 of Joe Winchell but in the end, it was Osteen taking second and Winchell taking third followed by #28 of Steve Smith and the #48 of Mark Smith.
Robert Glover's #74 had the pole for the Sportsman race but it was the #7 of Rick Johns battling to the front and taking the win. Following Johns was the #30 of Dale Clouser, #04 of Doug Samion, #62 of Randy Hecker and the #74 of Robert Glover.
The Super Stocks saw the #35 of Tim Ewing and the new #8 of Rich Clouser really having some side by side action. Clouser did a great job with his brand new car but it was Ewing in the end who took the win but inches. The #2 of Ron Whaley lead for awhile but Ewing took that spot and Clouser passed Whaley for second. Top five were: Tim Ewing, Rich Clouser, Ron Whaley, Darren Gould and Mike Soukup.
Strictly Stocks saw Curtis Smith's #63 lead for awhile but it was the hard charging #38 of Rob Thombley taking the win. Curtis Smith was second followed by Kelly Cauhill, Barry Parks and Joe Whittenton.
Next up at New Smyrna Speedway is the World Series of Asphalt Racing. See ya then. Have an opinion on this story? Post a message on our Message Board! news@karnac.orgor send a letter to the editor!
