First Race of the New Year for Charlotte County, the Hangover 250 | Danny Snow
Mother Nature did a good job for the race fans and the drivers of the Hangover 250 Tuesday, January lst getting the racing world of Charlotte County Speedway in gear for the New Year.
Sixty-five cars signed up for the slam-fest and made that good old "Southern Thunder" sound when our flagman Greg Roebeck threw the green flag for the start. Every- body did the best they could, vying for position and bouncing off each other, racing four and five wide for the first eighteen laps. Lap nineteen saw the red flag for a scary wreck right in the middle of the front stretch, when a hand-full of cars came together, leaving one of them against the inside wall on fire. The responses of the track rescue teams were put to the test as they doused the flames of the burning race car. The driver was OK thanks to the quick actions of the team.
After a couple more red flags for cars sitting the wrong way on the track (driver facing on coming traffic), the racing action continued to bump, grind and slam, until lap one-sixty five. The field of remaining cars was then turned around to race in the opposite direction for the duration of the race. The drivers were bouncing off of each other through lap two hundred and ten. Cars #90 and #63 of Terry Gay and Robert Ray got together in turn three and ended up going through the back pit exit, taking out a piece of the wall and bringing out the red flag once again. On the restart, we had another red flag when a car took out a section of the back stretch fencing. #85 Michael Gamache was out in front for the majority of the race, and was still on point when he took the checkered flag for the win.
