Tom Gallagher to Serve as Grand Marshall for 40th Annual Governor's Cup 200

By Jane Smith

Samsula, Fla. (November 10, 2005) Chief Financial Officer of the State of Florida Tom Gallagher has accepted the invitation to be the Grand Marshall for the 40th Annual Governor's Cup 200 at New Smyrna Speedway on November 19th. Although Gallagher's schedule is a very hectic one, he has decided to take time off and accept this once-in-a lifetime offer.

Tom Gallagher began his public service career in 1974 when he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives representing Miami-Dade area. Gallagher continued to do this for six terms. In 1987, then Governor Martinez appointed Gallagher secretary of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Gallagher was elected statewide in 1988 to the Cabinet office of Treasurer, Insurance Commissioner and Fire Marshal.

Healthy Kids Corporation, which was spearheaded by Gallagher, helped Florida's children who were not insured for health care. This was a major undertaking and has helped many families with their children.

In 2003, Tom Gallagher became Florida's first financial officer, an elected Cabinet office. Gallagher oversees the fiscal health of the State of Florida managing more than $63 billion coming in and out of state government annually, maximizing federal resources and helping consumers with problems related to financial services.

Reforms that Gallagher pushed after Hurricane Andrew helped when Florida residents were hit by four hurricanes in 2004. In 2004 Gallagher's proactive steps included a moratorium on insurance companies canceling or non renewing during hurricane season or due to consumers filing storm claims. Offering a free mediation program for consumers in disputes over fair resolution of storm claims has proven to be very successful for many Floridians.

A native of Wilmington, Delaware, Gallagher graduated from the University of Miami and was also served in the prestigious Presidential Honor Guard in the U.S. Army. Gallagher married a native Floridian from Madison County, Laura and are proud parents of a six year-old son Charlie.
