FMG Announces Joe Calnan As New Race Director | By Jack Smith
Joe Calnan has been tabbed as the new Race Director for the FMG Fastruck and the newly created Fast Late Model Series.
Calnan most recently was involved in Florida racing as the Race Director for DeSoto Super Speedway in Bradenton, Fl., a position he held for the last three years.
Prior to relocating to Florida he held the position of General Manager at Lee Speedway in New Hampshire for nine years, and has worked with several other traveling series in the northern United States and Florida.
The Fastruck organization plans to introduce a Late Model series in 2006, which is what drew Calnan to the series. "I think he (Bobby Diehl) has the right idea with the late models. We are trying to make it so that any late model in the State of Florida, if they change the motor, can come and run", Calnan said.
Interim Race Director for the series, Burt Thomas will focus his attention on the "six-pack truck series" running at Charlotte County Speedway in the second half of 2005. Thomas is retiring and relocating and would not in the running for the job.
Crate motors have become a big topic of conversation, pro and con, in racing circles in recent years, and is basically the promoters answer to rising costs.
FMG's Fast Late Model Series officials have said their rules will be in line with other crate engine series around the Country. Calnan is of course a big proponent of crate motors and explained his approach this way, "We dont want to turn any late model away", Calnan said, adding that "the rules that are out for the new series will be finalized in the next few weeks". He also said the series is "finalizing the details right now on which crate motor we are going to go with and how we are going to work it". Have an opinion on this story?
