2005 Legends Car Tour gets Under Way this Saturday at Citrus County Speedway | by Dave Westerman
For the first time in several years, Legends Cars in the State of Florida have a touring series to call their own. The 2005 Florida Legends Touring Series Presented By PBG will have its first event this Saturday night at the always exciting Citrus County Speedway in Inverness.
Russ Thomson, the Dealer for INEX and 600 Racing in Florida, is the Director of the Series and says the time has come for these popular cars to begin running other tracks in the state rather than just at their "home" track of Orlando Speedworld.
"The drivers have been wanting to run at some other tracks," says Thomson. "The younger drivers want the experience of some different types of tracks while the older guys just want to travel a bit and experience something new," he says.
Speedworld will still be the only track holding regularly sanctioned INEX Legends racing in 2005, but the Touring Series, with a separate points fund, will give the drivers a different challenge and allow drivers from out of state to come in and be a part of a Series that will encompass just nine races at four tracks in 2005.
Orlando Speedworld itself will host three of the races as will Desoto Super Speedway. Bronson Motor Speedway has two dates and the only date for Citrus County Speedway will be this weekend.
The 2004 Florida State Legends champion, Patrick Conrad, has sold all of his equipment to concentrate on his Super Late Model leaving the field wide open going into the first race.
Two of the favorites have to be Kory Abbott of Apopka who has won the first two RE/MAX Legends features at Orlando Speedworld this year and Sanford's Jeremy Colangelo who was the only driver to give Conrad a real challenge week in and week out last year. Both of these young drivers cut their racing teeth running against each other in Quarter Midgets in Central Florida.
Other drivers expected to participate include Brian Silas, Brandon Thomson, Bobby Byars, Kyle Dombeck, Stuart Dutton, A.J. Fulgenzi, brothers Mike and Mitch Verhaagh, Darin Coker and Doc Richardson along with many more.
The neat thing about a deal like this is that anybody from anywhere with a Legends Car can show up and run," says Thomson. "A driver can be from Florida, Georgia, Delaware, California or Canada and compete on an even keel because the cars and the tires they run on are all the same," he says.
Action on Saturday at Citrus will consist of time trials with the top twenty locked in to the 35 lap feature event. A B-Main will set the remainder of the field along with two provisionals.
