Fritts and Skinner Winners on Night 1 of Speedfest 2005

by Jane Smith

Lakeland, Fla. (Janaury 27, 2005) After two failed attempts to start the Super Late Model race and eight cars being damaged beyond repair or just not able to compete, the race went green with Jeff Choquette leading Wayne Anderson, Pat Kelly, Chris Gabehart, and Mario Gosselin.

By lap 4, Gosselin moved into fourth with Mike Fritts in fifth and Gabehart in sixth. By lap 10, Fritts was challenging Gosselin for third and by lap 11, Fritts had third and Mario was fourth. Choquette built up a seven car lead over Wayne Anderson by lap 22 and it looked like clear sailing for Choquette.

Lap 25 saw Fritts pass Anderson for second and set his eyes on Choquette and the lead. Lap 29 Fritts is right on Choquette and by lap 30, we had a new leader, Mike Fritts followed by Jeff Choquette, Mario Gosselin, Pat Kelly, and Wayne Anderson.

Anderson begins to slide backwards as Fritts leads the way followed by Choquette, Gosselin, Kelly, Ryan Matthews, Anderson, and Charlie Bradberry. Lap 46, Choquette and Gosselin are going side by side for the second spot which Gosselin finally takes.

Lap 79 sees the first caution involving Ryan Foster, Dwayne Bryant, and Wayne Anderson. Only Foster is towed in for the night. The race goes back green as Fritts leads the way.

On lap 91, Bradberry, who is running up in the top five, gets very squirelly going down the backstretch and dusts the wall. Bradberry looks to have the car under control when he and Dave Jackson make hard contact. Both drivers were fine but their cars were toast.

No more cautions and it is Fritts to the checkered followed by Mario Gosselin, Jeff Choquette, Dwayne Dempsey and Wayne Anderson. In tech, Dempsey was dq'd for too much left side weight changing the top five to Fritts, Gosselin, Choquette, Anderson and Ryan Matthews.
