Corteco Gaskets/GulfCoast Modifieds Roll into Sunshine Speedway

By Rick Warren

This weekend, on Saturday Nov. 20, the Corteco Gaskets/GulfCoast Modified Series will roll into Sunshine Speedway for Race number seven of the eight race series. It will most certainly be a night to remember, for many reasons. This night will be bittersweet for many, many Florida racers and fans.

It is always difficult to witness the end of an era, especially one that encompasses as many years as Sunshine Speedway. Countless memories have been born at this speedway, and even after the demise of this great racing arena, the memories will remain.

The Corteco Gaskets/GulfCoast Modifieds consider it an honor to be included in this historic evening of racing, and hope to add to the fond memories that fans and racers alike will carry with them when this speedway is gone.

Many fans and racers do not even remember a time when there was not a Sunshine Speedway, so we hope to add to the evening’s entertainment, and bring a close to this era in a manner that is fitting of this track’s place in Florida’s excellent racing history.

After 6 races in the series, Sunshine’s Mike Hinegardner holds a slight lead in the point standings, after a good run at Bronson Speedway.

The always tough Lee Collins is looking for a good finish, after bad luck at the last race knocked him out of the lead. Dwayne Dempsey, another strong competitor for the championship, is making a move back up toward the top of the standings, after a crash at the last race at Sunshine cost him valuable points.

Hinegardner also is leading in the Rookie of the Year standings, and is looking to solidify his lead over Chris Escott, who is currently fourth in the point standings.

The quality of the competition in this series is exhibited in the fact that in 6 races, there has been 6 different winners, 5 different fast qualifiers, and 6 different drivers have received the hard charger award. The race at Sunshine this weekend has all the earmarks of a real shoot-out, with so many drivers capable of grabbing the win.

A great deal of prestige, not to mention money, is at stake in the points race, and the season is winding down to crunch time. Don’t miss this one. Let’s all be there to celebrate the great times and memories that Sunshine Speedway has given all of us over the years.
