Goodyear Challenge Returns to Bronson Motor Speedway this Saturday

by Jane Smith

Samsula, Fla. (June 16, 2004) The Goodyear Challenge Late Models will tackle the "bullring": known as Bronson Motor Speedway for the second time in 2004 this Friday, June 19. On their first visit on April 10, it was Jason Boyd coming home with the win as he fought off Joe Winchell who definitely gave Boyd a run for his money.

Going into race number five for the Goodyear Challenge Late Models, it is Joe Winchell of Davie, Florida who leads the points. Winchell has one win in 2004 at New Smyrna Speedway on May 8. Winchell has a 23 points lead over second place Jason Boyd.

Boyd from Orlando, who has two wins under his belt, won the last race at Bronson but Winchell did not make it easy for him. Expect to see the same fight this time as Boyd would like the point lead but Winchell plans on keeping it.

Rich Clouser of Palm Bay stands only ten points behind Boyd in third. Clouser has not seen Winner's Circle yet but it is coming soon. Clouser, who drives for Bobby Sears, was the 2003 Rookie of the Year last year and second in points losing out on the last race to Jerry Artuso. Clouser has done well at Bronson in the past and hopes maybe this will be his lucky day.

Fourth in points is Chuck Burkhalter of Clermont who is coming off a sixth place run at USA International. Burkhalter has already proved that he is a force to content with in the 2004 season.

Jerry Artuso of Ontario was the 2003 Goodyear Challenge Late Model Champion and the winner of race number four at USA International. Artuso has had some bad finishes this year, not what he wanted for sure, and runs only 28 points behind Burkhalter. Artuso stands fifth in overall points.

Coming in sixth and seventh are Tate Pierce of Zehryhills and Martin Pierce of Sanford. Tate Pierce had his worst finish in 2004 at USA with a 25th place finish where as Martin Pierce finished eleventh. Both Pierces are expected at Bronson.

Charles Kopach of Astatulo comes home in eighth place with 189 points but only three points behind Kopach is Steve Smith of Lakeland. Rounding out the top ten is Jim Keating of Bonita Springs.

Bronson Motor Speedway will hold an open practice on Friday, June 18 from 4 to 10 PM. Secure transporter parking and free camping are also available. The Comfort Inn West in Gainesville gives discount rooms for guests who ask for the Bronson Motor Speedway Discount. Their number is 352-264-1771.

On Saturday, June 19, pit gates open at 2 p.m. The Goodyear Challenge Late Models will have their own practice from 4 to 5 p.m. with regular practice following after that. Racing starts at 7:30 p.m.
