Curl Memorial Goes To Hopper In Outlaw Modifieds

NELSON WINS GULFCOAST MODIFIEDS

By CLAUDE LEWIS

Doug Hopper won his first two races of the season Saturday night at Charlotte County Speedway.

He couldn't have picked better timing, for the two victories allowed him to capture the Dan Curl Memorial for Outlaw Modifieds.

The Curl Memorial rewards who does the best over twin 25-lap features. Hopper made it a no-brainer by taking both races in his No. 15 car.

Hopper, a 50-year-old who hails from New Port Richey, came into the action third in season Outlaw Modified points. Outlaw Modifieds are 4-cylinder cars reminiscent of small Open Wheel Modifieds.

"I had a new motor," Hopper said. "I told everyone I wasn't fooling around. I came down here to win."

Hopper said the only car he was really worried about was the No. 41 of points leader Raymond Jones. The Arcadia driver had bad luck in both races. In the first race, he was sent to the back for a wreck he had nothing to do with. Jones salvaged a fourth-place finish. In the second race later in the evening, Jones was fighting for the lead when he got on a wreck with Ted Hoversen.

"We'll be back," said Jones' car owner Dave Osteen. "We have a lot of racing left."

The Corteco Gaskets Gulfcoast Open Wheel Modified tour made its second stop of the season at the Punta Gorda paved oval Saturday night.

Teddy Nelson of Pinellas Park started on the pole and held on for his first career series win.

He was second in the previous Corteco race at CCS. Dwayne Dempsey of St. Petersburg was second in the 6 car.

Points leader Lee Collins of Immokalee was able to hold onto his lead with a third-place finish.

The top finish among CCS regulars was Kurt Riley, who was seventh in the 22-car field.

The race was relatively clean with long greens. There were only four cautions.

Fastsprint made its third appearance of the season at CCS. Hotshoe Dude Teate of Leesburg passed 18-year-old Troy Decaire of Tampa on lap 13 and sped to victory. Decaire grabbed second place, while Donny Nichols of Tampa was third.

Sportsman ran its fourth 50-lap feature in as many weeks. This time, the dice came up Dale Dean III in first. Steve O'Lone from the Southern Sportsman Series finished second. He won a 50-lapper at CCS a couple of weeks ago. George Ellsworth was third.

Danny Caylor returned to the paved oval to win the Super Stock 25-lap feature. Clete Trimmer was second in his Ford. Brent Garland was third in just his third race.

John Garrett won his 12th Thunder Trucks feature of the season, passing Richard martin on lap 14 of the 25-lap feature. Martin was second. Mike Bialecki was third.

Englewood heavyfoot Chris Huntoon won again in Road Warriors, padding his points lead. Doug Raastad took second and Andy Wood was third.

Chris Loney of Naples was the winner in 4-Cylinder Kids and Shawn Bates of Arcadia won in 4-Cylinder Adults.

112 cars came to Charlotte to have some fun Saturday night.

Nearly $2000 was raised in support of a local family man in need.
