Wayne Anderson Wins Powell Memorial

The 9th Annual Powell Memorial 150 Sunbelt Series race saw 20 quality Super Late Models take the green flag at Citrus County Speedway Friday night for the long run to Victory Lane. This prestigious race, that draws Florida's best, lives on in memory of the Powell family that lost their lives.

Mike Bresnahan pulled off another fast qualifying run stopping the clocks at 13.547 seconds. Wayne Anderson qualified second followed by Herb Neumann Jr., Scotty Crockett, and John Chance to round out the top five. Bresnahan pulled the #7 pill to invert the top seven qualifiers giving Patrick Williams the pole with Mario Gosslin flanking him on the outside pole.

John Chance and Scotty Crockett picked up row two being chased by Herb Neumann Jr. and Wayne Anderson. When the green dropped Gosslin went to the front and set the early pace while Williams fell into second, Chance third and Anderson pulled up in fourth.

Meanwhile the battle for the top five raged on with seven contenders swapping spots for 135 laps. When it was all over Anderson took the $5,000 win purse to the bank and was presented the Powell Memorial Trophy by James Powell.

Mario Gosslin jockeyed from second to fifth and back to second when the checkers flew followed by Rex Struble who moved from 9th to third at the finish. Scotty Crockett ran fourth, 14th starter Fain Skinner finished fifth, followed by Jonny Kay, James Powell, Rich Pratt, Mike Bresnahan and Perry Lovelady balancing out the top ten finishers.

Tommy Smith logged his 4th feature win of the season and solidified his point lead in the Hobby Stock division that had shrunk to just 2 points after last weeks action.

Curtis Neumann charged from the back of the 23 car field to second at the end of the 25 lap run followed by Tommy Roberts, point runner up Bobby Taylor and Doc James Batson who had to make his charge from the tail end of the field on two occasions after being spun out in his early run for third.

A new Thunder Stock driver put his name into Victory Lane in their 25 lap main Friday night. Ted Taylor started 6th and moved into the lead at the halfway point. Steven Stinedurf followed him through traffic for a 2nd place finish holding off Jerry Hoover who was going for his third win of the season. Point leader Lee Keller started 21st in the 22 car field and managed to make his way to a 4th place finish putting a little more cushion in his lead with his 4th top five finish and 5 wins under his belt. Fifteenth starter Wayne Heater came through the heavy traffic to round out the top five.

Ron Schreifels again proved he is King of the Intersection Action with his third Figure 8 win in a row over a 12 car field. Some of the St. Pete gang joined the locals and put on quite a show in their 25 lap main event that wrapped up the evening. Rodney Davis surged from a solid run in fourth to a second place finish over former Figure 8 champs Bob Hage and Robert Aaron. Curtis Youmans managed to out run Scott Gullett in a 6th place finish.

Citrus gets back to the regular racing action next Saturday with the Modifieds and Mini Cup cars returning. Joining them will be the Super Streets Stocks, Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocks, Thunder Stocks and 4 Cylinder Bombers. The fastest race cars on the Citrus County Speedway asphalt, the TBARA Sprint cars, are on the race card for Saturday night June 19th.
