| 37th Annual Governors Cup At New Smyrna Speedway | By John Barker
SAMSULA, FLORIDA - FASCAR Sunbelt Super Late Model Series will crown their 2002 season series champion Saturday night after the running of the South 40 Motorsports 37th Annual Governors Cup 200 at New Smyrna Speedway starting at 7:30 p.m.
The top four FASCAR series runners all have a chance of a championship run with 35 Super Late Models on hand for this premier race. Drivers will need a pit stop sometime during these 200 one-half mile high-banked oval circuits.
Michael Williams of Mims piloting the South 40 Motorsports ride is the FASCAR point leader with 875 marks.
Closely following the leader will be David Rogers of Orlando, FL second in points with 867 and he will be in his TM Ranch Dodge. Dick Anderson of Wildwood, FL, who has struggled with some early bad luck, could be in his new #92 black Super Late Model ride.
Running fourth in points with 816 is James Powell II of Astor, FL driving his A Natural Difference Chevrolet, who is also sure to be in the hunt.
Powell won at USA International Speedway in Lakeland, FL this season and was the first Super Late Model driver to ever win back-to-back races at Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, FL.
Other “Cars and Stars” expected to want their name printed on the exclusive Governors Cup trophy are Mike Fritts, Jimmy Cope of Pinellas Park, FL, Travis Kittleson of Merritt Island, FL, Wayne Willard of Atlanta, Ga., Daniel Keene of Land O’ Lakes, FL and Jack Cook of Ormond Beach, FL.
The first race called the Florida 200 was won by Wayne Reutimann of Zephyrhills at age 15 back in 1965 at Golden Gate Speedway in Tampa, FL defeating “Alabama Gang King” Bobby Allison of Hueytown, Ala.
Other top names who also ran this race were Richard Petty, “Fireball” Roberts, Rusty Wallace, Dick Trickle, Mike Eddy, Ed Howell, Red Farmer, Leroy Porter and Butch Miller to name a few.
Qualifying is scheduled for Super Late Models on Saturday between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Noted Floridian author Patrick Smith of Merritt Island, FL will be Grand Marshall for this New Smyrna Speedway event.
Smith has been nominated three times for a Pulitzer and was also nominated for a Nobel in 1985 plus numerous other prestigious writing awards. Smith stands in for Florida Governor Jeb Bush.
