Florida Pro Series Goes To Mac Johnson

By Marty Little
LAKE CITY, Fla. - After being close on several occasions, veteran Mac Johnson put all the pieces together Saturday night and handily won the Sunbelt Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep 125 Florida Pro Series late model event at Columbia Motorsports Park.

Two time FPS champion Dick Anderson took the lead at the outset from his front row starting spot but his night lasted only 15 laps before suspension problems sent him to the pits for the duration.

With Anderson gone Jonny Kay took command and appeared very strong but Johnson, who was the quick qualifier and stared 10th was steadily picking his way through the 16 car field enroute to the front.

By lap 40 Johnson caught Kay and they battled briefly with Johnson the new leader on lap 42 but Kay went back in front two laps later. Johnson went ahead for good on lap 48 but Kay stayed in his shadow until a flat tire sent him to pits and out of contention on lap 82.

Shane Sawyer took up the chase of Johnson but at the checkers had to settle for runner-up honors. Brian Finney, Jimmy Britts and Rich Pratt rounded out the top five finishers.

The support Florida modified 20 lapper went to Roger Webb in a wire to wire run with a good drive over John Crawford and Max Mock.

Swain Norris was the best of the street stocks in that 20 lap main ahead of J.F. McClellan and Kyle Habig and the pure stock headliner went to Will Jerkins atop Marty Wood and Russell Patterson.
