Sportsman Feature to Evans at Charlotte

by Danny Snow
With a roar of engines, the green flag waved for the Classic Cars first six lap heat race. Melbournes #77 Danny Shearer sat on the pole for the six car field. It was a rocky start for #7 Bud Spencer from Palm Harbor, who did a little spin causing a restart. When the green flag dropped again the battle was on for the top four positions. The four cars got together in turn three with #74 Ed Yates of Orlando and #77 Shearer getting tangled up bringing out the second caution of the race. Shearer was still on point for the restart, and it was three car wide racing going into turn three with #4 Eddie Thornton of Orlando coming out in front. Thornton held position for the win with Shearer in second and #54 David Nunes, also from Orlando, in third.

#30 Patrick Sanders of Orlando had the pole for the second six lap heat, but by lap two, #5 Jim Rahman of Clermont had made his way up from the back of the pack to take over the lead. Rahman held on for the win followed by #1 E. T. McGhee of Deland in second and #30 Sanders in third.

Eight cars lined up for the first Kix Country Sportsman heat with #63 Ryan Malone of N. Ft. Myers on the pole. #92 Mark Evans took over the lead on the first lap of this six lap race and held it for the win. #76 Joe Reese of Bonita Springs took second, and #40 Jeremy Goddard of Naples made his way up through the field to take third.

#20 George Ellsworth of N. Ft. Myers had the pole for the second heat. Six laps can go by quickly when theyre all green, and thats exactly how this race was run fast and green. #9 Jerry Bryant of Punta Gorda took the win followed by Ellsworth in second and #22 Danny Yates of Cape Coral who made his way up through the pack to take third.

Shirleys Bookkeeping Rebel Road Warriors continued the all green racing action with their two heats. The first heat began with #68 Al Welling of N. Ft. Myers on the pole, but #9S Taz Sidock of Cape Coral moved into the top spot on the first lap of the race and held on to take the checkered flag. #73 Del Beckner made his way up from the back to take second followed by Welling in third.

As five more cars lined up for the second heat, #88 Wayne Wilson of Ft. Myers sat on the pole. By lap two #55 Conrad Molter of Naples had taken over the top spot and held it for the win. Wilson came in second followed by #93 Jeff Firestine of Nokomis in third.

#7 Bryan Maine of Cape Coral sat on the pole for the first Hendrys Mango Maniacs Cowboy Cadillacs six lap heat race. As the trucks fought for position, #46J Jay Bryant of Arcadia took the lead on the first lap of yet another clean and green race and held it for the win. #24 Justin Bryant, also from Arcadia, took second followed by #7 Maine in third.

As the trucks lined up for the second heat it was #37 Cheryl Weaver of Port Charlotte on the pole. One of the differences of racing a truck became clear when #33 Don Van Acker bumped #73M Richard Martin in turn one, popping open the tailgate on Martins truck. #37 Weaver stayed out in front to take the win with #2 Gene Pack of Grove City taking second and #73M Richard Martin of Port Charlotte coming in third.

The K & S Transport, Inc. Open Wheel Modifieds were up next for their first six lap heat with #6 Kevin Williams of Port Charlotte on the pole. #63 Phil Morrison jumped out to take the lead on the drop of the green flag. The caution came out on lap three when #6 Williams bumped #95 Chris Turner of Naples causing a spin. #63 Morrison still had the point for the restart and held it for the win with #95 Turner taking second and #6 Williams making his way back up from the rear to take third.

Heat two got underway with #55 Dan Atwell of Naples on the pole. The racing action was tight, but the drivers managed yet another no caution heat. Atwell took the win with #80 Chris Dean of Ft. Myers coming in second and #25 Scott Kleiber of Naples in third.

Twelve Classic Cars lined up for their twenty lap feature with #5 Jim Rahman on the pole. #1 E. T. McGhee got a little loose and spun on lap two bringing out the yellow flag. Eddie Thornton had moved the #4 car out in front by lap six and there he stayed for the remainder of the race. All the while, #54 David Nunes was pushing his way up from the middle of the pack. Thornton held on for the win followed by #5 Rahman in second and #54 Nunes in third.

The Kix Country Sportsman thirty five lap feature got underway with #63 Ryan Malone on the pole of the sixteen car field, but it was #92 Mark Evans out in front at the end of the first lap. They were three cars wide coming out of turn four on lap five when #67 James DuBose of Arcadia slid sideways down the front stretch and backed into the inside wall. DuBose had to pit for a flat tire but managed to make it back out before the green flag dropped for the restart. #92 Evans was still out in front when #18 Craig Amboyan of Port Charlotte blew an engine in a ball of fire on lap nineteen. Amboyan got out all right, but the all volunteer broom crew sure had a lot to clean up. With Evans still out in front, #40 Jeremy Goddard and #22 Danny Yates battled over fourth place, with Yates landing it in the end. #92 Evans remained out front to take the win with #8 Raymond Jones of Arcadia in second and #76 Joe Reese in third.

The Cascades Waterworks Fastruck twenty five lap feature was up next with #93 Jeff Firestine on the pole, but by the end of the first lap it was #9 David Baute of Brandon out in front. Firestine took the lead back on lap five, just before the first caution of the race came out on lap six as #25 Gary Foxworth of Lutz spun in turn one. The caution came out on lap fifteen when #15 Bob Spaeth of Maderia Beach took a little spin, then again on lap sixteen when #22 Danny Glover Jr. of Pinellas Park tapped #44 Paul Grynewicz III of New Port Richey. Glover was in the rear on the restart. Lap twenty one was a busy one as #44 Grynewicz III lost a tire, and #2 Mickey Kempgens of Tampa and #40 Paul Grynewicz ended up in the inside wall. All three drivers were all right, but it did bring out the red flag and bunch up the field for the final laps of the race. #93 Firestine took the win followed by # 70 James Glover of Pinellas Park, who had made his way up from the back of the nineteen car field to take second and #9 Baute in third.

#68 Al Welling sat on the pole for the Shirleys Bookkeeping Rebel Road Warriors twenty lap feature, but once again #9s Taz Sidock jumped out in the lead on the drop of the green flag. A spin on lap two #3B John Boyer of Cape Coral brought out the only caution on the race. By lap nine the battle was on between #55 Conrad Molter, who had started out in the back of the pack, and #9S Sidock for the top spot. Molter had a five to six car lead over Sidock by lap thirteen, but Sidock had managed to close that gap by lap seventeen. The battle for fourth place was raging on lap eleven between #73 Del Beckner and #3B Boyer. #55 Molter held on for the win with #9S Sidock taking second. #73 Beckner came in third but was disqualified in tech for high compression. #68H John Hanuschik of Cape Coral took the official third place position.

Ten trucks lined up for the Hendrys Mango Maniacs Cowboy Cadillacs twenty lap feature with #7 Bryan Maine on the pole. #46J Jay Bryant took the early lead while #33 Don Van Acker, #37 Cheryl Weaver, and #2 Gene Pack, came charging up through the field. #73M Richard Martin of Port Charlotte was out in front on lap five. The caution came out as #24 Justin Bryant and #2 Pack got together in turn three, and by lap twelve #33 Van Acker was out in front. When Van Acker went high and tapped the wall in turn two, #37 Weaver took the lead and didnt let go, taking it all the way for the win. Van Acker came in second followed #2 Pack in third.

The K & S Transport Open Wheel Modifieds thirty five lap feature got underway with #6 Kevin Williams on the pole. The caution came out on the first lap as #63 Phil Morrison and #55 Dan Atwell got together in turns one and two. As a result, Atwell ended up with a rub rail pushed into the right rear tire and had to pit to change it. Atwell was later able to rejoin the racing action. #95 Chris Turner took the lead on lap four and held on tight. A blown radiator hose and spin ended the night for #80 Chris Dean on lap thirteen. #95 Turner took the win followed by #25 Scott Kleiber who had made his way up through the pack to take second, and #6 Williams in third.

It was another great night of racing, and you couldnt have asked for better weather. Hope to see you all there again next week for more great stock car racing.
