Knight Owns Citrus Figure 8 Special

by Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 8/18/01) Patience was the ingredient that paid off for Scott Knight in the Mike Scott Plumbing Figure 8 - 30 lap special Saturday night at Citrus County Speedway. Point leader Bob Hage took the green flag off the pole and set the pace to lap 25 before Knight turned up the heat and got down right serious about picking up his third win of the season and the $400 win purse over the 19 car field. Hage was able to hold off the hard charges of defending champion Robert Aaron, Mark Wilkins and Charlie Meyer to round out the top five. The race was marred by one major accident at the 10-lap point when Ken Crews tried to beat leader Bob Hage to the intersection that ended Crews night the hard way.

Herb Neumann Jr. picked up his 5th win of the season over a 23 car Late Model field. Racin Mason Love had a five lap match race going with pole sitter Jim Smith before Smith had to let Love take over second. Billy Bechtelheimer continues to run well outrunning Rex Struble in the race for fourth.

Fire, the most feared thing in short track racing, took out Jeromie Fehrenbach at the mid point of the race. Apparently his distributor disintegrated, cutting a fuel line and his car was an inferno when it came to a stop in turn three and four. Jeromie has worked so hard to get his racecar together and running well and he was using this season to get the right set up with hopes of making next season a run for a championship. Now it is back to the drawing board for the second year in a row for the dedicated car builder and race driver.

Wayne Lewis led a short field of Sportsman for a wire to wire win only to lose the win in post race inspection for an illegal manifold. Runner up Mark Dominique inherited his second win of the season on the D.Q. followed by Alan Struble, Mike Veltman, Rex Struble and Terry Cater.

Kathy Ray led a 21-car Street Stock field that saw a lot of jockeying for position for all 20 laps. Ernie Reed put the hammer down in lap 18 to make the final pass on Ray for his fourth win of the season and picking up three points on Travis Nichols who had to settle for a fifth place finish in the hard fought battle. Kevin Roberts held out for third over Victor Stanley.

In preparation for the upcoming Lenny Brown/Ed Ironside Perry Mini Stock Memorial 50 set for September 1st, Rick Coleman is getting serious about his intentions with his second consecutive win. His brother Frank chased him to the flag but just didnt have enough, settling for second. Rookie Jay McKenzie had his best finish of his young career out dueling Mark Sowell in the run for third. Ron Bartley locked on to a fifth place finish.

Twenty-two Hobby stocks took the green and another intense battle saw the winner decided in tech. Glen Colyer Sr. thought he had his first win in the bag with a flag to flag win only to weigh in 40 lbs. to light. Runner up Kreg Belcastro picked up the win on the D.Q. J.D. Goff nailed down a solid second with Tommy Smith chasing him to the flag and brother Richie Smith right on his rear bumper at the line. Nick Fiorentino held out for a fifth place finish.

Clint Simmons picked up his first win in his second week in Thunder Stock action. Curfew shortened the race to 7 laps after three caution flags slowed things down. Melvin Farmer, Allen Turner, John Donahue and Doug Jensen round out the top five.

Next Saturday it will be a full Late Model, Sportsman, Street Stock, Mini Stock, Hobby Stock and Thunder Stock race card. Also added to the program will be Kids Rides in Race Cars.
