It's time to race!

August 14, 2001

New Smyrna 7/11

New Smyrna Speedway saw plenty of action Saturday night as the rain finally gave the drivers a break and let them race. All but Super Lates had heats and features. Fans got to see Jimmy Winks drive the #2x modified, usually driven by Jason Boyd and we saw the return of the #16 modified of Justin Henderson who totalled his car going for his first win and knocked himself silly and scared all of us who love him silly. Welcome back Justin and great to see Jimmy again.

Brian Bellaw in the #77 Late Model took an early lead over the field of cars and was able to hold off some very hard charging cars to take the feature win in the Late Model division. Behind Bellaw was the #22 of Dave Snodgrass, #4 of Sonny Linn, #57 of Chad Pierce and #25 of Timmy Todd.

Rick Tuney had the pole for the Mini-Stock feature race but it was Tim "The Missileman" McPhail who took the win. Behind McPhail was the #55 of Tuney, #0l of Conrad Grenier, #6 of David Castello, and the #9 of Dale Casteel.

Ted Helms and Bill Spade fought side by side for the feature Super Stock race but as to which one won, I am not sure. At this point, I had to find a lost little boy and did not get to see the finish but this is what I saw last. #61 - Ted Helms, #15x - Bill Spade, #57 - Joe Evans, #45 - Mike Soukup, and #28 - Chris Peludal.

Tank Tucker and Jimmy Winks put on a great race for the fans as they battled for the lead. Jimmy had the lead for a great deal of the race but Tucker was back there, working his way up. Eventually Tucker took the lead and the win with Winks in second, Bobby Blake in third, Rob Underwood in fourth and Mark Vandevender (who was the pole sitter) in fifth. Welcome back Justin Henderson who finished seventh and Jimmy Winks (a long time track friend).

The Sportsman division saw Doug Samion and Dale Clouser going side by side and never taking each other out for the lead. But it was the #04 of Samion who finally won the battle with Clouser's #30 right on his tail. John Nausbaum, Ron Lufcy, and Tommy Dove rounded out the top five.

The last race of the night was the special, a 25 lap Strictly Stock race. If you like racing action, this was the one to watch. The #50 and #27 kept you on the edge of your seat as the #50 would go high on the track almost touching the wall and yet beating the #27 for the lead. This was a great race and I apologize for not knowing the names of these drivers but at that point, I had two tired little boys who were ready for bed. The top five were, #50, #27 John Wronksawski, #22 - Donnie Smith, #11 and #35.

Next Friday night, the Racecar Engineering Sunbelt Super Late Series returns to try once again to run at Orlando SpeedWorld and New Smyrna will host regular racing with heat sand features. Hope you all have a good week, don't float away and hopefully we will see you next week at the track.
