DeSoto Sportsman Win goes to Ramsey

Wallace Ramsey of Bradenton took the checkered flag in the Selective HR Solutions Sportsman after a running fight, and battling a loose car, to hold off hard-charging Gus Coorssen of Sarasota. "The champion is right there," Ramsey said of Coorssen. "He could've taken me out any time. My car was sideways near the middle of the race." With Coorssen on his bumper, Wallace's car slipped sideways coming out of turn two on the last lap. Rather than risk causing a collision, Coorssen backed off, letting Ramsey regain control. Ramsey went on to win the feature. "The car was going away real bad at the end," Ramsey said. "My hat's off to Gus. What a sportsman-like driver. I'd like to thank Marine Surplus, Fred and Debbie Wagner, Leep Batteries and of course Ramsey Ceramic Tile and Marble. Without them this wouldn't be possible." Bradenton's well-know driver Jeff Anderson took third place in the action filled race.

The race of the evening went to the Pure Stock, a fender-to-fender shootout between Mark Gill of Bradenton and Joe Wengerd of Sarasota. Gill jumped to the lead early and led the race until the last two laps when Wengerd began coming on strong using the high and low lanes looking for a pass. Gill barely held off Wengerd for the win. "Our front end was off just a little," Gill said. "It was a heckuva good race, Joe races clean but, man, it was stressful. I haven't won in a while and it's great to be back." David Yahraus of Sarasota took third place in the exciting feature.

Jeanne Whitted of Sarasota collected the win by mere inches in the Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Stock Minis. Whitted held the lead through most of the 20 lap feature but on lap 18 a caution flag tightened the field on the restart. Coming out of turn four on the last lap, heading for the finish line Jesse Dutilly of Bradenton made a run for the win, missing by the length of a bumper. "I didn't know if I could hold Jesse off," Whitted said. "I just figured I'd put it to the floor and keep trying. On the restart they had to catch me. We were side-by-side at the end. Jesse is a good driver." Buddy Traylor of Bradenton took third place.

Dan Hall of Sarasota claimed the checkered flag in the Comcast Street Stock. "The last three laps my brake peddle fell off," Hall said. "I was using the stub to brake. Still, it was a great race and Clint drove me clean. Clint Roberts of Duette placed second and Bruce Ahlers of Bradenton took third place.

Todd Bontrager of Sarasota took the checkered flag in the Trucks. "We had a massive wreck the last time we were here," Bontrager said. "We had to put it back together. We had it together tonight. We were on a rail. I'd like to thank the fans for supporting the truck series." James Glover of Pinellas Park placed second and Jeff Firestine of Nokomis took third place.

Matt Watts of Dade City collected the win in the Manatee Lumber Modified Minis. "It's been a rough, rough year," Watts said. "But I think we've started to figure the car out. It's been a struggle and we needed this win." Steve Martin of Pinellas Park placed second and Clay Joseph of Bradenton took third place.

The Outlaw Modifieds came out firing on all four cylinders as Bobby McElroy of Palm Beach outgunned the father and son team of Ted and Lance Hoverson of the Florida Keys. "This is our first year in the Outlaw Modifieds," McElroy said. "We're really enjoying it. When you get out front like I did you have to really go with these guys." With 14 cars in the lineup for the Outlaws, the battle was fierce and fast. "Bobby got a big lead, I started ninth," said Ted Hoverson, who placed second. "I tried to run him down but he was just too fast. He did a fine job. I like this track it's like Daytona to us."
