It's time to race!

July 1, 2001

Turner OWM @ Charlotte

What a fun night for the fans! Not only did they get to see some hot racing, but it was Family Night to boot. The kids enjoyed the face painting and bounce house, and everyone enjoyed munching on the free burgers while they watched the races.

The action started with qualifying laps for the Lee's Auto Detail & Transmission Pure Stocks. 11X Mike Getts took the fastest time at about 78 mph. The top ten fastest cars drew for position and it was #31X Elbert Butts of Nocatee who would have the honor of sitting on the pole later in the night.

The first full race of the night was the Dan Curl Jr. Memorial Outlaw Modifieds with #51 Mark Patten of Ft. Myers on the pole. Only two laps into the race, #31 Heidi Locke of Tavernier blew an engine bringing out a caution and the all-volunteer broom crew. #7 Phil Brigham of Ft. Pierce had the point for the restart. #57 Mike Lauter of Coconut Grove took over the lead on lap five, but lap ten saw #5 Ted Hoverson of Key West out in front. Hoverson held on to the position for the rest of the twenty five lap race and took the win. #55 Lance Hoverson of Key West took second followed by #57 Lauter in third.

The K&S Transport Open Wheel Modifieds were up next for their fifty lap feature. #28 Mike LeMaster of Naples had the pole. A five car pile-up at the drop of the green flag brought out the Mackie's Body Shop wrecker and a restart. #95 Chris Turner of Naples had the point after a lap two restart and held onto it for the win. #80 Chris Dean of Ft. Myers took second followed by #25 Scott Kleiber of Naples in third.

#31X Elbert Butts sat on the pole for the Lee's Auto Detail & Transmission Pure Stocks fifty lap feature. #31X Butts was still out front after a lap eighteen restart, but this was soon to change. By lap twenty four it was #7 Danny Caylor of Lehigh Acres out in front and #38 Joe Reese of Bonita Springs in second. #6 Kevin Utter of Ft. Myers blew an engine on lap twenty eight, bringing out a caution and ending his night. Before the race could get back underway, the rains came, putting an end to the night's racing fun. #7 Caylor took the win followed by #38 Reese in second and #31X Butts in third.

We will have racing again on July 14th. It will be Cat Country Limited Late Models, K & S Transport Open Wheel Modifieds, Kix Country Sportsman, Lee's Auto Detail & Transmission Pure Stocks, Little Vic's Concessions Modified Minis, Big Wheels Mini Stocks, Lee's Auto Repair Road Warriors, Shirley's Bookkeeping Rebel Road Warriors & Hendry's Mango Maniacs Cowboy Cadillacs, this is Mid Season Championship for all & trophies will be handed out to top three drivers in all classes. Maybe Mother Nature will let us finish what we all come to enjoy, a fun and exciting night of stockcar racing, short track style. Have a safe and happy 4th of July and we will see you there.
