Freed Notches Another Mini-Stock Win @ DeSoto

Marty Pierce of Sanford took the lead, stayed ahead of the spins and collision and roared to the Pepsi winners circle in the Turner Tree & Landscape Limited Late Models feature event at DeSoto Speedway Saturday night. In the last race of the damp evening after a two and a half hour rain delay, Pierce drove a near perfect race and claimed the win that gave him double point to add to his second place in the season standings.

Due to the late start the Limited didn't run qualifying laps. "We've had this thing torn up the last three races," Pierce said. "I guess the way to do it is to start up front and stay out front. We're not usually good at drawing pills but tonight we got lucky." The second of four caution flags in the 50 lap race came on lap 10 when Jeff Wogoman and Jeff Dufresne got together between turns three and four. Wogoman went to the pits. Pierce, Dufresne and Bryan Mansfield took over the top three positions, with Sonny Hughes and John Shields holding third and fourth. Hughes and Mansfield bumped on lap 33 and Hughes was sent to the rear on the restart.

On lap 40 Mansfield and Dufresne collided on the front stretch and both cars had to the pits. Pierce Rich Rogero and Shields took over the top three spots and finished in that order. "We've struggled with this car but it ran well throughout the race," said Rich Rogero who placed second. "I'm glad to get it home in one piece. I come from Ft. Lauderdale and I'm glad we came tonight." Hometown hero John Shields of Bradenton took third place in the action filled event. 'I like to run on the outside and thats where I got it done," Shields said. "We've had some bad luck but the car ran real well tonight. We found a little problem with this Mopar and took care of that. I think we'll do all right for the rest of the season."

In other races:

Joe Wengerd of Sarasota claimed the championship shootout title in the Pure Stock feature event. Wengerd started 13th and ran hard and steady until taking second place at the checkered flag. A technical disqualification of Mark Gill of Sarasota gave Wengerd the win. "After that first caution we seemed to start running better," Wengerd said. I just started running hard, taking the opening I was given." More than 15 cars started the 50 laps race that had just three cautions flags. David Yahraus of Sarasota took second place and Troy Davis of Bradenton took third place.

Driving Steve Perez's number 92 in the Callaghan Tire Open Wheel Modifieds Teddy Nelson of Pinellas Park took his second win in a row. "It's a good car," Nelson said. "Last week was a kind of a gimme but we had to earn this one. We've been working trying to get the other car done and I want to thank everyone that helped. And Thank Steve for the use of this car." D.J. Hoelzle of Dunedin placed second in the event and Bill Davis of Wauchula took third place.

Gus Coorssen of Sarasota came out blazing to take the checkered flag in the Selective HR Solutions Sportsman. Brian Teeters of Palmetto took second place and Wallace Ramsey of Bradenton took third place. Chet Roberts of Duette won his first Comcast Street Stock feature, edging out hard charging Dan Hall of Sarasota and Sue Purington of Nokomis. "It's been a few weeks since we got the car right," said the elated Roberts. "It was good last week but we got into it a bit and messed it up. Oh, man this is great, my first win. I have to thank my crew and my girlfriend. They did it all for me."

Frank Welch of N. Ft. Myers won the Manatee Lumber Modified Minis. Matt Watts of Dade City placed second. Steve Gill of Sarasota took third place.

Todd Freed of Bradenton collected his third win of the season in the Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Stock Minis. Jesse Dutilly of Bradenton placed second. Arlin Pope of Bradenton took third place.
