Tucker holds off Boyd for Patterson Memorial at NSS

by Jane Smith
Three feature races that were rainned out last weekend were run first. Sammy Graham in the #1 Super Late Model took that feature after dueling it out with B. J. McLeod who had to retire his car with problems. It was Rick Tunney in the #55 Mini-Stock taking that feature win with Conrad Grenier running second. The #27 Strickly Stock also won that feature race.

Then it was time for the feature events of this night. First feature out were the Sportsman with Doug Samion #04 on the pole and winning from the pole. Following behind Samion was the #3 of Ian Huffman, #30 of Dale Clouser, the #07 of Ron Lufcy and the #2 of Bill Love. The #90 hit the wall hard in turn 3 but he was fine, just not the car.

Next up was the Tommy Patterson Memorial. Jason Boyd in the #2x set fast time but after drawing pills, he was on the outside pole with the #15 of Tank Tucker on the pole. Seventeen modifieds took the green flag with Tank Tucker taking the lead and Jason Boyd right on his tail and Tom Root following close behind the two front runners. This race ran almost green to checker with only one caution until the final lap when Tom Root went into the wall in turn 3. But no matter what Boyd did, Tucker never gave up the lead to him. Boyd ended up in second, AndySaffolli in the #l was third, Rob Underwood in his new #09 modified was fourth and Mike Fitch in the #l was fifth. Tucker dedicated his win to Tommy Patterson since he had known him and his family.

Next up were the Mini-Stocks again with Conrad Grenier in the #0l on the pole and winning from the pole. There was a major crash down in turn l and 2 which took out a number of cars and red flagged the race. When racing resumed, the #0l spun out in turn 1 but was given back his place due to track conditions from the wreck. Since my son needed to go to the restroom right at one lap to go, that lap had Grenier in front, Tim McPhail in second, Ted Vulipus in third, Jamie McCague in fourth and the #4.

Super Late Models saw the new #11 of David Rogers and also the #33 of Ricky Wood and Kevin Finney in the #80 for the first time in a year. David Rogers had the pole and David Rogers won from the pole. B. J. McLeod started on the outside but once again had problems and had to retire from the race leaving Sammy Graham in the #1 in second. Joe Fitos in the #63 finished third, Ricky Wood in the #33 was fourth and the #27x of Mike Fritts or Mike Good in fifth.

The Super Stock also had a crash on the first lap taking out a number of cars. It does not work to go four wide on the front stretch at New Smyrna. Bill Space in the #15x started on the pole and won from the pole. In second place was the @12x, #30 of the Wiz was third, #16 of David Gould fourth and #32 fifth.

The Strictly Stock did run another feature race but I did not get to see this one due to a tired and thirsty little boy.

Next week at New Smyrna there will be a bag/sack race $200 to win with a V8 Demo Derby and heats and features in all divisions. Also at Orlando SpeedWorld on Friday, the TBARA Winged Sprints will run (they were rainned out this week) along with the Mini-Cup cars and Dwarf Cars. No Super Lates or Modifieds.
