Reutimann wings it to the checkered flag, Sherwood takes Street Stocks @ DeSoto

Wayne Reutimann of Zephyrhills has been racing at Desoto Speedway since the local track took wing. Saturday night the well-known driver put his wings in the winner's circle in the first Winged Sprint race of the season. Ruetimann started 10th in the 22 car field and blazed out to a quick lead. Running at speeds in excess of 130 mph on the straightaways, Reutimann made the race look easy as he shot across the finish line. "I'm hopng we were running something like 12.80 (106mph) lap time," Reutimann said. "I know the 19 was turning 12.70 in the heat race so we had to pick it up a little. We made a few changes to make us a little faster and it worked like a champ." Reutimann passed three and four cars on the stretch to take the lead in the 25 lap feature that saw only three caution flags. "You have to give credit to the car," he said. "This race car is one of the finest, and the man that takes care of it and our sponsors. You have to have all of them together. You can't just put a driver out there and do good. I have a lot of young lions out there after me. This is what keeps me young. I just ran as hard as I could for I knew they were on my tail." Dude Teate of Leesburg tailed Reutimann looking for a slip or an opportunity to pass but it wasn't to be. Teate finished second with last year's Rookie of the Year in the TBARA Winged Sprints, Dave Pletcher of Clearwater, took third place in the high powered event.

In other races:

James Glover of Pinellas Park shot out to an early lead and held on to take the checkered flag in the DeSoto Trucks event. "This Q Auto & Injury Chevrolet ran really well all night," Glover said. "I have to thank my guys in the pits. We weren't that good at qualifying but we made a few adjustments and we came to the front. I'm glad to be here." A brusing wreck on lap nine of the truck event sent Todd Bontrager of Sarasota to the pits and sent fast qualifier Mickey Kempgen to Mantee Memorial for observation. Going into turn three Bontrager and Kempgen bumped and both cars spun into the retaining wall. Kempgen caught the brunt of the imapact. "I hope Mick's all right," Glover said. "I loaned him the truck just to race tonight. And I sure didn't want anything to happen to him or Bontrager. Todd an I have a really good run going in the points and I enjoy racing with him. I thought we might get him and I out front and see what happened." Danny Glover Jr of Pinellas Park placed second and Brian Donahue took third place in the event.

Bruce Sherwood of Bradenton roared to the winners circle in the Comcast Street Stock. "I'd like to thank my sponsors Karnac.com, City Tire, Dan's Food Store, Fastime Motorsports and everyone out here, thanks for coming," Sherwood said. "And, yes, I had my hands full. This car is for sale, I'm ready to go fishing." Dennis Wilson Jr of Bradenton placed second and Casey Hall of Tampa took third place.

Mark Gill of Bradenton took his tenth win of the season in the Pure Stock feature. Bob Petrilli of Sarasota placed second and Greg Banach of Bradenton took third place.
