Ernie Reed Jr. Wins “Jackie Gordon Memorial 30”

by Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 6/16/01) The Jackie Gordon Memorial 30 was the first Street Stock Special of the year and the attrition rate was high, the action wild and racing was door handle to door handle all the way to the $350 win purse for Ernie Reed Jr. Twenty cars started and when the checkers flew there were only ten cars still running. Husband and wife team Kathy and Robert Ray worked their way from their 9th and 11th starting positions to finish second and third in the 30 lap main event. Early leader Don Teague managed to come from the rear of the pack on an early restart to finish fourth. Fast qualifier Dean Lawyer also held the lead in the early going and managed to come back for a fifth place finish after being sent to the rear in an early race spin. The other top ten finishers were Jason Waller, Mike Veltman, Curtis Yoamans, Travis Nichols and Glenn Fleming.

Sixteen Late Models took the green in their 30 lap main with ninth starter Herb Neumann Jr. making the pass for the lead in lap 24 and logging his fourth win of the season. Billy Bechtelheimer backed up in the early laps and managed to come back making a late pass on Dale Sanders, taking second and relegating Sanders to third. Herb Hoefler came on strong for is best finish of the season in fourth ahead of Scotty Crocket who was out for his first appearance of the year. Sanders and Neumann won the heat races.

Rex Struble muscled his way to the front of the 14 car Sportsman pack at the half way point of their 20 lap main event, taking his fourth checkered flag of the year only to lose it in a money protest for running an illegal distributor. Mark Dominique inherited his first win of the season on the D.Q. followed by point leader Mike Veltman, Terry Cater and Alan Struble. Dominique and Rodney Cox logged the heat wins.

For the second week in a row Rick Coleman took the checkered flag and fortunately weighed in O.K. this week for his first legal win of the season. Mark Sowell went for the Start from the rear Bonus and put 19 of the 21 starters before the checkered flag came out and had to settle for a second place finish. Last weeks winner John Coleman held out for third over George Neumann who was driving for the new owner of his racecar, Jay McKenzie. Kevin Harrod logged a fifth place finish, keeping him 8 points up on the Mini Stock point ladder. Rob Wheatley, Kevin Harrod and Rick Coleman picked up the heat wins.

The Hobby Stock Dominator Richie Smith blew to the front of the 20 car-starting field by lap 15 of their 20 lap feature. It was all over but the shouting as the second year driver logged his 9th feature win of the year plus taking his heat race. Nick Fiorentino picked up his heat and had his best finish of the season, taking a second over Brandon Johnson, Roy Perkins and J.D. Goff.

For the second week in Junkers, Josh Teague won the race but lost out in tech. The first time for an illegal camshaft this time he was a no show for post race inspection thereby passing the win on the Gary Johnson. This was Garys third win of the season. Melvin Farmer held out for third over John Donahue and Allen Turner.

Next Saturday all seven regular divisions will be running with the spot light on the Mini Stocks in the ICC/Astec Paint 30 for $350 to win. The Figure 8s are back with a full race card of the regulars in heat and feature action. It should be a killer show.
