SPORT ALLEN PADS POINTS LEAD WITH WIN ON DOUBLE POINTS NIGHT AT EAST BAY | by Thom Watson GIBSONTON, FL: On Alliance Elevator and Hoist night at East Bay Raceway, Sport Allen, in the #88 machine, padded his points lead in the Sprint Car class, with his fourth win of the season. Not only did he take over the lead last week in points, this was double points night and Greg Leonard, who was second in points, was not here. Allen started 12th and managed to work his way through the field and moved into third place on lap seven. Roland Johnson, #72 took the early lead, but gave it up on lap four as the #22 of Sheldon Kinser looked strong and made the pass for the lead. Kinser was strong in the outside groove and held off Allen for several laps, who was running the inside line. Coming off turn three on lap 15, Kinser suddenly slowed and Allen immediately took the point position. Allen quickly built his lead and by lap 19 had a 10-car length lead. Meanwhile the #6 of defending Sprint car champion, Johnny Gilbertson, was on the move and had worked his way into third place. On a restart, Johnson passed Gilbertson, to move into third. On the last lap Gilbertson made a mad dash and passed both Johnson and the #41 of Gene Lasker at the finish line to take the runner-up spot. Lasker finished third.
In the Limited Late Model feature, #17, Jamie Burrows took over the lead at the halfway mark and held on for his second win in a row. Phillip Bower in his #71 machine took the early lead and held on until Burrows passed him, for the lead, in turn three. Burrows started 12th in the 19 car field and was on the move from the green flag. By lap four he passed the #66, Ricky Land for third. On the following lap he took over second and had his sights set on the leader. "The car ran great, its like driving a Cadillac" said Burrows from Victory Circle. David Simpson in the #23, finished second, with the #71 of Phillip Brower coming home third. Karrnac.com would like to express condolences to the family and friends of second place finisher, David Simpson, whose mother passed away earlier this week.
Allie Bessette, #99, took the Street Stock feature that was shortened to 13 laps because of the time limit and the numerous cautions. Eric Johnson in the #41 took the early lead with Bessette taking over second by the second lap. On lap five Bessette dove low under Johnson coming down the backstretch to take the lead for good. It was his first win ever in a feature. Points leader, #23, Terry Bronson had a $100 bounty on his head, if he did not win and was still running at the end. Bronson started last and was involved in an early race spin and never made it to the end. Danny Paris, #09, and John Borders, in the #8, moved into second and third on lap 11 and both held on to finish that way.
In Late Models, David Schmauss, #105, was strong all night and took the checkers. Starting in eighth place, Schmauss was up to third by lap two and was just getting started. A lap later he was in second and when leader, Bob Peterson, #45 spun on his own, Schmauss was there to take over the lead. After that the race was for second as the lead was up to a full straightaway. The #03 of Phillip Cobb who had followed Schmauss and into second place as Peterson was spinning, held on to the runner-up spot. The #47 of Scott Howard came home third.
After trying the inside groove for several laps, the #27 of Scotty Williams, was finally able to make it work on lap 12. He was able to get around leader, #16, Derrick Nagle and went on to a five-car length win in the Mini Stock class. Williams had moved into second place on lap seven and tried turn after turn to pass Nagle, until he finally went to high in turn one and surrendered the lead. Nagle was able to hold off eventual third place finisher, #29, William Hampton and finish in the runner up spot.
