Winchell x 2 @ Hialeah

HIALEAH, Fla. - Making his first start at the track since late March, several time track champion Joe Winchell had his act together Saturday night in claiming both ends of twin 30 lap late model features at Hialeah Speedway.

In the opener Bobby Shelton paced the first nine laps before Winchell got past and drove to an easy victory over Gary McGoron, Danny Maddox, Craig Brown and Mike Cohen. In the nightcap it was a different story as Brown led over division rookie Chalo DeCastro with the two of then quickly distancing themselves from the dozen car field. A lap seven yellow regrouped the field and gave Winchell, who had made some chassis changes, a chance at the leaders. On lap 12 Winchell dispatched DeCastro and took off after Brown. Lap after lap Winchell made a move on the veteran Brown and was rebuffed but finally on lap 28 he made the pass in turn four. Brown trailed Winchell to the stripe ahead of DeCastro, Maddox and McGoron.

Street stock points leader Rick Lutz made easy work of that 25 lap main event as he ran to feature win number five over early leader Bubba Martone, Mike Kohut, Pat Flack and Ron Wilson.

The mini stock 25 lap headliner was no contest as David Russell rang up win number 10 this season, the most of any driver at the speedway. Rookie Tommy Styer claimed runner-up money over Eddie Lowery, Richard Thomas and Jerry Woodall.

Victor Leo bested the cyclone field with a wire to wire run in the 25 lap feature, his first win this season. Roger Pfau, Roger Bohannon, Frank Kelliher and Don Morey trailed at the stripe.

Figure 8 action saw David Drury the winner over Wilson, John Bentley, Billy Joyner and Kenny Wilkins in the 15 lap event.
