Joe Boyd takes DeSoto LLM

Joe Boyd of Riverview roared to the Pepsi winners circle in the Turner Tree & Landscape Limited Late Models 100 lap feature event at DeSoto Speedway last Saturday evening. In a race that saw only three caution flag Boyd chased Sonny Hughes of Bradenton after Hughes jumped to the lead on lap two. Through the next 46 laps Hughes and Boyd ran bumper to bumper. On lap 49 Boyd drove deep in turn three and slipped under Hughes. "Sonny a good driver," Boyd said. "We've raced against each other for a long time. I saw he was getting a little loose and I tried the outside but I wasn't good enough. I decided to ride a little longer and waited until I could get under him. It was a good race." Boyd had claimed lead and it was all the popular young driver needed to lead the field to the winner's circle. "The car was really working good," he said. "We borrowed this motor for this weekend and put it in last night. I'd like to thank Dan O'Connell for loaning us the motor and my sponsors; All America Steel and Tubing, All America Building and Carports and Lydecker Construction. If wasn't for these guys I couldn't be out here. They're a great help and I appreciate it." Mike Hovis of N Ft Myers placed second in the high-powered race. "I'd especially like to thank my sponsors and crew," Hovis said. "There are a lot of good people with this car." Jeff Dufresny took third place with John Shields of Bradenton in fourth and Tommy Younkman of Sarasota placing fifth. Although Eddie Howell set fast time, with the pull of the pills he claimed ninth in the line up and finished sixth in the event. "We never give up," said Dufresny, who had to started from the rear after a caution flag. "I hate it for all the guys at Lawton Motorsports. They worked really hard on the car. I feel we had the car to win the race. Sometimes it doesn't always work out but we'll be back to get it."

In other races: D.J. Hoelzle of Dunedin blazed to the winner's circle in the Callaghan Tire Open Wheel Modifieds. The second win of the season didn't come easy for the young driver. "This is the best the car's been all year," Hoelzle said. "I took some advice and started working the outside as quick as possible. This is great. I have family from California and Virginia here. It's great to have them here and get a win on the same night." Pat Nanney of Bradenton placed second. Bill Davis of Wauchula took third place.

Hal Vickery of Bradenton took the checkered flag in the Selective HR Solutions Sportsman event. "This is a really competitive class," said Vickery after his first win of the season. "But my pit crew worked real hard on the car. I hope this broke th eice for me. We've had some bad luck." Gus Coorssen of Sarasota placed second and Johnny Cassidy took third place.

Jamie Cassidy of Sarasota won the Comcast Street Stock feature event. "First win of the season and first Street Stock win," Cassidy said. "We got out front and tried to keep it there. It worked out real well. Hopefully we've turned everything around. I'm going to keep at it and finish the year in the Street Stock." Rich Clouser of Grant placed second and Casey Hall of Tampa took third place.

Mark Gill of Bradenton took the win in the Pure Stock. "It was my night," Gill said. "Everyone wrecked or broke. I was definitely third tonight but it opened up and there it was. I got lucky." Keith Thorbin placed second and Danny Anderson of Bradenton took third place.

Clay Joseph of Bradenton collected the win in the Manatee Lumber Modified Minis. "We've been all year trying to get this win," Joseph said. "I want to thank Bruce Carbone, this is his car, and Buddy Traylor, my wife Stephanie and the everyone that has helped me on the car. This win is dedicated to Rennie Wilbanks. He been sick and we hope he get better real quick." Chip Gaines of Sarasota placed second and Matt Watts of Dade City took third place.

Jason Reisman of Leesburg, Fl took the checkered flag in the Legends. "It's been a long time since we've been on this track," Reisman said. "And we've went through three chassis in the last month. But it's finally coming around and working right. This is getting my confidence back. It feels good." Charlie Butler placed second and James Rodriguez of West Palm Beach took third place.
