Neumann Reigns In Citrus Late Models

By Larry MacMillan
Eight divisions made for a very active Memorial Day Special at Citrus County Speedway Saturday night plus a burnout contest that really turned the crowd on with Mark Dominique overcoming Kolleyne The Burn Out Queens secret weapon of a Hooters outfit with a wild and smoking front straight burn out. The Hooters girls were greeting the winners in Victory Lane to spice up the night of action.

Eighteen cars took the green flag for the Citrus Liquors Late Model 30 and 12th starter and point leader Herb Neumann Jr. worked his way through the very competitive field to pick up the point in lap 25. Neumann went on to his third win and the $1,300 win purse followed by Robbie Yoakam who was racing his #3 car for Cyrus Robinson. Tate Pierce survived an airborne ride over Forest Goff to hold out for a solid third place finish. Danny Johnson took fourth over Daniel Keene Jr. Yoakam and Chance took the heat wins.

A short Sportsman field saw Rex Struble move into the #1 racer, formerly driven by Sport Wilson, and put it into Victory Lane for the third time this season. John Gann put the pressure on right to the checkered flag while point leader Mike Veltman was looking for his fourth win in a row but had to settle for a third place finish. Chris Hooker and Alan Struble rounded out the top five.

Travis Nichols chalked up his second Street Stock win and put a little more cushion in his championship point lead in their 20 car 25 lap feature run. Victor Stanley had a solid second place finish outrunning Mike Bell, Don Teague and pole sitter Glen Fleming.

A twenty-car Mini Stock field took the green flag in their 20 lap main event. Mark Sowell started fifth and moved to the point by lap 10. Defending champ George Neumann came out of eleventh spot to put the pressure on Sowell right to the checkered flag for a solid second. Doug Hopper had his best finish of the season right on Neumanns rear bumper at the finish followed by Richie Powers and Mike Moore. Harry Futch Jr. won his very first heat and also won a set of racing tires in the My Favorite Driver contest drawing. Neumann won the second heat.

What goes around comes around and that proved to be true in the Hobby Stock action. Steve Thomas won the race last week and suffered a D.Q. in tech giving the win to Richie Smith. Richie was on his way to win number 8 in their 25 lap main this week only to have his rear end go away on lap 23, taking him out of the race and putting Thomas in the winners circle for his third win of the year. J.D. Goff picked up second followed by Glen Colyer Sr., Jimmy Mitchell and Nick Fiorentino.

A solid 18 car Figure 8 field chased pole sitter Mike Veltman for 10 laps before sixth starter Tim Sharrone got under him to take the point and the win for his first trip to the Figure 8 winners circle. Curtis Yoamans locked on to Sharrones rear bumper to hold out for second. Jeff Kramer, Mike Veltman and Bob Hage round out the top five.

Allen Turner banged his way through the 19 car Street Legal Junker field for his first feature win of the season. Point leader Stuart Madison picked up his tenth top five finish with a solid second place run from the back of the pack with new comer Billy White, Jerry Hoover and Troy Davis picking up the balance of the top five spots.

Rounding out the night of action, Terry Tullis of Winter Haven picked up the win in the Mini Cup 15 lap main event. Brett Jameson survived an early spin to come back through the 18 car pack to finish second just ahead of Tom Clark. Terry Tullis and Jameson took the heat wins.

Next Saturday will feature the American Freightways Late Model 30 for $1,300 to win plus Sportsman, Street Stock, Mini Stock, Hobby Stock, Street Legal Junkers and a wild Demolition Derby for $500 to win.
