Lasker EastBay Sprint Winner

by Ken Sands
There was no full moon Saturday night at East Bay Raceway in Tampa Florida, but the way the racing was, you would have thought surely there was. Veteran Gene Lasker took the lead from pole sitter Brandon Dover in the Lacey's Tax Service SPRINT CAR main on Lap 1 when the action was stopped for a double flip involving Roland Johnson and Bubba the Love Sponge, both drivers were ok, when the action resumed it was Sheldon Kinser Jr. flipping the Jess Fordyce #4. Kinser was ok. When the action finally resumed it was Lasker holding off the field until lap 17 when Greg Leonard in his JD Byrider / Art Janes Insurance #94 took the top spot. The action was once again stopped when Brandon Dover took a wild flip in turn 1 on lap 17. Dover was ok, the car badly damaged. 4 time winner Leonard looked like he was going to be the man to beat, however Lasker had other thoughts. The 1997 Champ was not to be denied as he took the lead back from Leonard on lap 19 and held the top spot for the rest of the way. The Ted Fleming #41 with Gene Lasker at the wheel was finally back on top and in Victory Lane. After a polish victory lap to celebrate the end of his long winless streak, Lasker thanked his sponsors and proclaimed proudly that he has kept the streak of Ted Fleming alive, that every driver that has driven for Fleming had claimed a win at East Bay. Leonard held on for second over Sport Allen, Casey Johnson and Danny Martin Jr.

In LATE MODELS it was Donnie Tanner taking the Laceys Tax Service main event in a race that was shortened to 11 laps when the time limit expired. Current point leader Tanner had to hold off a charge by Bill Howard who had spun on lap 1 and had to go the the rear of the 24 car field. Howard appeared to have the fastest car, but the veteran Tanner held his line and Howard was only able to get alongside of Tanner right near the end of the curfewed event. Bobby Alexander Sr., Phillip Cobb abd Keith Nosbisch rounded out the top 5.

The Laceys Tax Service Dash for Cash was taken by Bobby Alexander Sr. over K D Kelly and J R Austin. Jeff Mathews took the top spot in the Laceys Tax Service LIMITED LATE MODEL main over Forrest Gough, David Simpson, John Norris and Terry Gay.

Scotty Williams was the victor in the Laceys Tax Service MINI STOCK main over Scott Howard, Devin Dixon, Chris Livernois and William Hampton. The last time Kurt Taylor visited East Bay Victory lane was back in 1994.

That all ended this week as Taylor in his American Drilling #4 was the winner in the Laceys Tax Service LIMITED SPRINT main. Darrin Miller, Andy Kelley, Tim George and David Kelley rounded out the top 5.

The Laceys Tax Service STREET STOCK A main went to Terry Bronson for his 7th win of the season over Steve Johnson, Wayne Hays, Jim Greenwood and Charlie Wiberg.
