Magic Mike Takes Dominique Sportsman 30 @Citrus

by Larry MacMillan

Mike Veltman put some more cushion in his point lead and his racecar treasury with his fourth win Saturday night. Only 13 cars went for the M Dominique Mobile Home Sportsman 30 this month and it got off to a tragic start for the sponsor of the race. Mark Dominique got sandwiched between Rex Struble and Terry Cater, got airborne and wound up on his top going into turn one on the start of the race. Fortunately he was able to walk away from the accident but his racer sustained quite a bit of damage and was out for the night before the race really got started. That was not the end of the high attrition rate either as only 8 of the starters were able to finish. Veltman just had too much for Sport Wilson in the final laps for his fourth win of the season. Wilson had to settle for another second place finish just ahead of rookie Chris Hooker and Alan Struble. Johnny Sanders backed up his heat win with a strong fifth place finish. Rex Struble won his heat but didnt survive the feature.

Late Model action saw Perry Lovelady hold off another late charge by Herb Neumann Jr. in the 30-lap run that also saw quite a few caution flags. Billy Bechtelheimer came from the back of the pack to put Dale Sanders in a race for fourth with Tate Pierce. Robbie Yoakam and Lovelady took the heat wins. Richie Powers had it all together and was again the designated driver for Kevin Harrod, coming up with his first feature win of the season. Defending Champion George Neumann gave Powers a run for his money but had to settle for another second place run. Rob Wheatley, John Coleman and Frank Coleman locked on to the balance of the top five positions over the fifteen car starting field. Heat wins went to Jimmy Bartley and Frank Coleman.

Ernie Reed Jr. powered his way through the 19-car Street Stock field that was loaded with designated drivers for absent contenders. Mike Bell was looking for his third win but had to settle for a hard fought second place when the checkers flew. Victor Stanley outran Don Teague and designated driver John Chance for fifth, giving Travis Nichols 37 points that kept him in the lead for the division point race. Reed and Mark Sanders took the heat wins.

Steve Thomas smoked the Hobby Stock field with 18 cars taking the green flag from the start. Richie Powers was in pursuit when the checkers fell but came across the line a distant second. Smith did log his 7th win of the season after Thomas racer was found illegal in tech on the post race inspection. Newcomer David Amundsen had his best finish of the season in second followed by Brandon Johnson, J.D. Goff and Art Bruengingsen. Heat wins went to Jimmy Peters and Eric Sharrone.

Street Legal Junkers were playing demolition derby on their racecourse but Jerry Hoover avoided most of the entanglements for his fourth win of the season. Nikki Sarver had her best finish of her rookie year with a second over point leader Stuart Madison, John Donahue and Doug Jensen.

Next Saturday night its the Citrus Liquors Late Model 30 for $1,300 to win plus Figure 8s, Mini Cup Cars, Sportsman, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocks and Street Legal Junkers for the Memorial Day Weekend Special.
