Hialeah Speedway Action

by Marty Little

Charlie Coyle roared from his front row starting position to lead all 25 laps in winning the late model sportsman headliner Saturday night at Hialeah Speedway. Coyle out jumped divison newcomer John Covington and was never headed throughout. Covington stayed close and claimed the runner-up spot ahead of point leader Danny Maddox, Steve Weaver, Jr and Gary McGoron.

Tom Daly, sitting in for Travis McCoy, made shambles of the street stock field as he too paced all 25 laps for his first win this season. Mike Orth chased Daly gamely but settled for second money. Mike Kohut, Steve Godlewski and Rick Lutz were next across the stripe.

Once again the mini stock field fell to Buddy Sizemore and his Toyota for the third consecutive week as he dominted the 25 lap run from the third lap. Kenny Strong ran strong for second spot over a distant Tommy Styer, Richard Thomas and Bill Calder.

The 75 lap cyclone special saw several dominant drivers fall out early and five different leaders, but when the checkers fell it was Bruce Moerlins across the line first. Leading the final nine laps, Moerlins topped Frank Kelliher, Chad Orth, Heather Lunsford and Harvey Freeman for his first win of the season.
