1st Checkers to Nordstrom in Columbia OWM's

by Marty Little

Picking up where he left off two weeks ago, Eddie Gainey took the lead from Jason Garver on the third lap and powered to the win in the 25-lap late model stock feature event Saturday night at Columbia Motorsports Park. Garver set the early pace but was no match for Gainey who scored his fourth win of the season on the highly banked half-mile oval. Chris Tedder claimed runner-up honors ahead of Garver, Michael Haigh and points leader Harold Rankin.

The Florida modified crowned a first time winner as Greg Nordstrom ran flag to flag at the front of the field for his initial victory here. Brian Campbell kept the pressure on Nordstrom from much of the event but gave way to Roger Webb in the late stages. Campbell checkered third over Mike Russ and Roger Graham.

Brad Fiene nearly had the win money counted when he and Gale Grayer, who had battled for most of the event, tangled on lap 19 and Dave Barber, Jr scored his first career win in the 20 lap street stock finale. Nick Reid was second over Oral Tanner, Grayer and Fiene in the final rundown.

The crash-marred pure stock main saw point leader William Jerkins grab the lead from Brad Nixon with four laps remaining to win the 20 lap contest. Clay McRae, Nixon, Danny Coleman and Trish Berry trailed at the stripe.

An exhibition race for three-quarter late models went to Mike Carrigg in their first appearance at the speedway.
