Sizemore Doubles Over Competition

By Jon Harney

Marion Sizemore pulled off a first at Putnam County Speedway as he won in two different divisions on the same night.

A solid field of 18 Modifieds took the green flag for the 25-lap feature. #32 Robbie Barris shot quickly to the lead quickly and built a considerable advantage until Sizemore worked past #6 Chris Hammond. Sizemore steadily eroded Barris' lead and after several circuits overcame Barris on lap 23. Sizemore won his fourth straight Modified feature going away with Barris second, Hammond third, #1 Paul Sizemore fourth, and #96 Randy Hecker fifth.

Sizemore also debuted his #2 Aggressive Signs Limited Late Model. He and #18 J. O. Nobles broke away from the rest of the pack and battled until lap 10 when Sizemore slid under Nobles and grabbed the lead. Joe Grubb was involved in the evening's most spectacular crash as his #15 made contact with the outside wall on the front straight which caused his car to climb the wall and do considerable damage to the retaining fence. Fortunately the fence prevented debris from entering the stands and Grubb was not hurt. When the green flag returned Sizemore, Nobles, and #33 Bill Kopka ran nose to tail for the remaining laps and finished in that order. #02 Travis Rhoden and #43 Tim Gamble rounded out the top 5.

Street Stocks ran a very competitive and combative 20-lap race. Robert Ammons had several tigers by the tail as Richard Adams, Mitch McCoy, and #3 Kenny Hall all tried furiously to wrest the lead. After much fender-banging and surprisingly few cautions, Ammons' #42 held them off at the line. #23 Adams outdueled Hall for the runner-up slot while #XX Scott Clarkson beat #33 John Reiter for fourth.

Late Models ran a 10-lap Cash Dash. Danny Ahrens proved to be strongest of all in the #91X. #17 Burce Durden and #37 Charles Permann followed Ahrens.

Mike Scranton bested a field of 14 Hobby Stocks to take his first win of the season. David Miller's #21 Mustang had them all covered until Miller's motor turned sour on lap 15. #72 Scranton outdragged Miller on a restart and ran off with the victory. Ronnie Soltis came home second in the Diamond "S" Trucking #61 while Miller survived for third. Mitch Wise was fourth in the #20 and newcomer Shane Nichols' #65 was paid for fifth.

L. J. Klemons was the winner of the Pure Stock feature on the track. After tech inspection, however, the win was awarded to #61 Mike Tripp. #24 Ken Durham had a strong run for third with #88 David Conner and #24L Brenda Little following suit.

Mini Stocks brought their largest field of the season. 14 cars took the start with several pavement drivers from St. Augustine Speedway trying their hand on the dirt. #33 Jay Farris and #72 Jake Hartley were enjoying success with the conversion until they encountered problems midway throught the 15-lap affair. #74 Mike Gibbs stayed steady throughout the evening and picked up the checkers. #15 Don Strosahl had a good run in second as he beat #44 Don Brayton at the line. #43 John Gamble and #72M Marlon Durbin were next across the line.

Limited Sprint cars will join the action at Putnam County Speedway this Saturday Night.
