Two Citrus Drivers Collect on Start From the Rear Bonus

by Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 4/28/01) Eight divisions took on Citrus County Speedway Saturday night with 144 cars in the pits and a full house in the grandstands. Highlighting the night of action was the M. Dominique Mobile Home Restoration Sportsman 30, the 911 Emergency Racers and the wild Figure 8s.

Defending champion Mike Veltman took on the challenge of starting in the rear of the 16 car Sportsman feature and put the field away in the M. Dominique Sportsman 30 lap main. Terry Cater took off from the green flag and set the pace to lap 29 while Veltman made the pass on the 14 cars ahead of him with the help of several caution flags that closed up the field on each of the restarts. It was a side-by-side finish with Veltman making it two in a row by inches at the checkered flag and picking up $610 for his effort. Race sponsor Mark Dominique held out for a strong 3rd place finish followed by Bill Oestreicher and Sport Wilson. Heat wins went to Cater and Rex Struble.

Twelve 911 Emergency Racers took the green flag in their 20 lap main and eighth starter Bob Hart from the Pinellas County Sheriffs Dept. was a man on a mission, overtaking local favorite Joe Gill from the Citrus County Sheriffs on lap 18. Gill was nursing a heat race mishap that really messed up his handling but he was able to salvage 2nd. Steve Wagner, Clark Wagner and Jerry Brauer, all from the Pinellas County Sheriffs Dept took the balance of the top five spots. Steve Wagner took the heat win.

A last lap collision between Curtis Yoamans and Darryl Hage tied up the two leaders and the beneficiary to the checkered flag Charlie Meyer said, it is better to be lucky than good. Defending champion Robert Aaron worked out a second place finish and Yoamans and Darryl Hage managed to recover and salvage a third and fourth. Point leader Bob Hage locked in a fifth place finish over the 16-car field.

Herb Neumann Jr. started 7th and found the outside groove very much to his liking, going on to win his 2nd Late Model feature of the year over the 21 car starting field. Billy Bechtelheimer moved to the top of the points ladder with his second place finish. Neumann moved to second, just one point up on John Chance who finished 11th. Perry Lovelady, Dale Sanders and Tom Haselmayer round out the top five with Cyrus Robinson and Bechtelheimer taking the heat wins.

Rob Wheatley locked in his second win of the season over a 20-car Mini Stock division after a wild battle with Mike Allen who led to lap 15. Kevin Harrod gave Wheatley a run for his money on the final five laps for a second place run followed by Allen, Don Faunce and Rick Coleman. Heat Winners were Allen and Faunce. Dean Lawyer was a man on a mission in the Street Stock 25-car 25-lap feature and became the 7th different winner in the division. He was followed up by 3 previous winners, Michael Bell, Wes Wilson and Harley Wilson. Don Teague celebrated his 12th anniversary with a solid 5th place finish but is still looking for his first win. No heats were run.

Hobby Stocks ran a feature only night for 21 of 25-laps scheduled due to multiple caution flags. The out come was the same as it has been in 6 out of 7 races with Richie Smith taking the start from the rear challenge and adding the $100 to his win purse for the second week in a row. Runner up was Brandon Johnson followed by Steve Thomas, J.D. Goff and Glen Colyer Sr.

A last lap collision between Street Legal Junker leaders Roy Blotz and Robin Bauer put Jerry Hoover in the Winners Circle for the third time this season. Stuart Madison out ran Rick Badessa, Gary Johnson and John Donahue in the race for second over a 16-car field. The Meagher Farms/Stype Pest Control Hobby Stock 30 highlights Saturdays race program at Citrus County Speedway. All regular divisions will be running and providing Kids Rides in Race Cars for the first time this season.
