FIVE TRACK CHAMPIONS JOIN BRONSON’S SHOOTOUT FOR $1,0000

by Gil Peck
Five different race tracks and their champions were represented Saturday night as 22 MINI-STOCKS diced for a first prise of $ 1,000.Dade Citys Matt Watts, Charlotte County Champion Frank Welch, Citrus Countys Doug Hopper, and perennial favorite Robbie Yoakam joined. Bronson Motor Speedways own Jeff Stalnaker for a shot at the $1,000 grand prise. In addition to this field of stars, Mark Smith towed his # 27x mini-stock all the way from Charlottew, North Carolina for a piece of the purse. Unfortunately, he got a bigger piece of the front stretch wall on lap # 44 and was done for the nite. Thew race got off to a ferocious start, with Matt Watts leading the way in his beautiful Dodge Challenger, followed by Tater Stalnaker, brother Jeff, Larry Goolsby and Clint Foley. Lap five saw the start of the fireworks as Taters car ( # 14) erupted an engine on the main straightaway. Water erupted out of that thing like a wash machine!, Tater said after the race. The re-start on lap # 13 saw Watts ( #3x), Larry Goolsby (#27), and Clint Foley ( # 7) pull away in a three car freight train. Goolsby was the first of the group to spin as he was tapped from the rear by the # 44 of Pinellas Jeff Guilbault. Ten more laps of green flag racing ended on lap # 37 as Josh Hars went for a wild slide down the main straightaway after hitting the fourth turn wall. I had the binders locked up and all I could think of was going over the wall!, said Josh after the race. Fortunately the car came to a stop before going over. Josh was unhurt.. Of the 22 cars that started the race, 18 were still in the race at the 50-lap mandatory red flag stop for fuel and tire checks. When the green dropped again a mad scramble up front saw Jeff Stalnaker, Dave Westrich, and Frank Welch go after the lead car of Matt Walls. Jeff ( Stalnaker # 11) got by on lap # 88 and the others followed, as Watts slipped to fourth. The car just went away said Matt ( Watts) after the race. We were hooked up but I knew I probably couldnt hold off the 11 car. ( Stalnaker) as the tires were about to give up and effect the handling. Everyone had a lot of fun and it was Jeff Stalnaker who came to the finish line first after being hotly pursued by Dave Westrich and Frank Welch.

SUPER STOCKS

Doc Batson held off a strong challenge from Brody Giddens Saturday night, as Brody returned to his ride after several weeks off. The car felt good, he said. I feel good, too. Doc is always fun to race against and Im back 100 per cent. Al Bouchard and Wes Keller gave Doc something to think about early in the race as they battled for second place. Kellers # 34 A-plus Air Conditioning Camaro slammed the wall on lap # 14 and slid all the way down the front stretch, before coming to a stop and being done for the night. Bouchard was next to falter as a tire went down on his car. Some fast work by his pit crew put him back in the race and he salvaged fifth. It was still fun!, said Al after the race. We didnt hurt the car any and well be back next week!
