Jimmy Ware Wins Goff Racing Late Model 30

(Inverness, Fl. 4/14/01) Tom Haselmayer looked like he had the Goff Racing Late Model 30 wrapped up from the get go but after three cautions half way into the race his racer gave out. This opened the door to Jimmy Wear who went on to win his first ever Late Model feature at Citrus County Speedway. John Buzinec survived several wrecks in front of him to salvage a second place finish over George Ingole and Fred Stoner. Tim Sharrone threatened to take the lead in the final 3-lap shootout but misread the white flag on lap 29 and backed out of it thinking it was the checkered flag. He was able to salvage a fifth place finish just ahead of John Chance, Danny Johnson and Billy Bechtelheimer. Haselmayer and Dale Sanders took the heat wins.

Jim Smith set the pace from the green flag in the 17-car Sportsman feature for his first win of 2001. Rex Struble worked his way from his 9th starting spot to finish with a strong 2nd at the checkers. Outside pole sitter Robert Pilkinton survived two encounters for a third place finish just ahead of rookie Chris Hooker and Mark Dominique. Smith and Struble also won the heat races.

Twenty-three cars took the green flag and the entire pack chased Terry Cater for 18 laps before fifteenth starter, Wes Wilson made the pass on Cater for his first win of the season. Cater lost out in his second place finish, weighing in too light in tech, which moved Dean Lawyer into second for his best finish of the year. Last weeks winner, Harley Wilson Sr., moved from 14th to finish third, just ahead of hard charger Travis Nichols who started 18th. Outside pole sitter Don Teague held out for fifth. Heat wins went to Lawyer, Mark Sanders and Wes Wilson.

In a race that saw 19 cars start and multiple caution flags which shortened the race to 15 laps because of time consumed to clean up, Frank Coleman worked his way from an 8th starting spot to Victory lane for his first win of the season. Kevin Harrod held out for second after winning his heat followed by Mark Sowell who passed 11 cars to get there. Richie Powers and John Coleman round out the top five. Jake Garver won the first heat, his first win ever in his second year of driving.

Four time winner Richie Smith started 18th in his quest for a fifth win in a row and was cut short by Steve Thomas who started 17th in the 20 car field. Thomas came home the winner just ahead of Richie, with Brandon Johnson, Erica Wilson and Steven Brown following up in the nose to tail finish. This was Browns first race in several years, driving for Roy Perkins who will get the points. Heat winners were Erica Wilson and Tommy Smith.

In a wild 16-car figure 8 race, defending champion Robert Aaron logged his first win of the season. Jeff Kramer from the St. Pete gang had his best finish in second place. Peanut Higgenbotham out dueled Dwayne Fults to the line in the race for third. Bob Hage locked on to fifth being chased by Ken Crews, Mike Veltman, Larry Harris and Daryl Hage.

Gary Johnson is a definite threat to take the Street Legal Junker crown, becoming the only two-time winner of the season in the beginner division. Rick Badessa, John Donahue, last weeks winner Stuart Madison and Roland Sizemore picked up the top five spots over the sixteen car field in their fifteen lap main event This wrapped up the 7 division race night at Citrus County Speedway for week five of the 2001 season.

Next week will see the Late Models going for another $1,300 win purse in the LaPerle Memorials Late Model 30. Sportsman, Street Stock, Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocks and Street Legal Junkers will be joined by the Dwarf Cars to round out a full program in week six of the 2001 season.
