Nothing small time as Dwarf Cars visit Bronson's bullring

by Gil Peck

BRONSON, Fla. (April 7, 2001) - It sure is good to be home and thanks to all drivers, crews, and fans, that welcomed me home. The show wasn't bad either! Racing was at it's finest as the Dwarf Car Association paid it's monthly visit to the bullring. These speedy little cars get around this track at speeds approaching the Late Models and Saturday was no exception as Allen Davis scooted to victory over a hard charging Dan Berry. Berry tore through the field from mid-pack to challenge for the lead, but each time his '34 Ford replica darted to the inside to make the pass, Davis held him off. The rest of the field was scrambling for position behind them. Rick Lundeen and Dennis Archinal had their own battle going as they moved through the field to join the leaders. They finished third and fourth respectively, but the outcome was in doubt until the very last lap. A scary moment for Jim Harrison of Bartow occurred on lap #18 as his fire engine red #11 needed the fire company as it erupted in flames. Jim escaped uninjured after a good drive through the field. The Bronson Safety Team did a splendid job of quickly extinquishing the blaze and getting Jim to safety. Don't miss these exciting open wheel cars as they will return May 5.

MINI-STOCKS: The past two weeks have been photo finishes at the checkered for these powerful cars. The winners mix it up, too, with Larry Goolsby defending last week's win. Tater Stalnaker had the stuff Saturday night and raced Dave Westrich hard for the lead. He got by on lap #11, but the battle also allowed family rival Jeff Stalnaker Sr. to close and begin to chase Tater. These two cars battled for the win, and in the end it was Tater who brought home the checkered flag. Dave Westrich was third, and Doug Hopper finished fourth in his brand new entry out of New Port Richey, Florida. This Saturday night is the Big Bunny " barnburner" as these cars will scramble for 100 laps and a big $1,000 to win. Be sure to be on hand for all the exciting action.

SUPER STOCKS: Doc Batson brought home the win in his orange #4 Batson Chiropractic Camaro Saturday night as he outraced Wesley Keller and Al Bouchard. These three cars played a fierce game of bumper tag for several laps as they tried to get by the slower car of Joey Long. One groove down low, was the only answer. Wesley Keller thrilled the crowd as he tried a move up high on the back stretch and sparks flew like crazy as he used all of the track, and then some, to get by Long. He gathered the A-Plus Air Conditioning entry up, though, and then proceeded to battle Al Bouchard in his Cornerstone Kitchens # 14 for second place. " This is the way racing is supposed to be!, exclaimed a happy Wes Keller after the race. " I think we all had a lot of fun tonite!" So did the fans, Wes. "My car was good, plenty strong after the changes we made on it this week," said Al Bouchard in Ed Angel's Cornerstone Kitchens entry. "Who-Boy-that was fun!"

PURE STOCKS: Mickey Burns always brings a lot of entusiasm and speed to the bullring and Saturday night was no exception as his #22 Camaro prevailed for the win over Doug Webster of Ocala. Krystal Batson had a fine ride and brought her pretty blue Camaro home third. The car looked like it was really " hooked up" and this young rookie lady is proving to be real tough. Everyone, including Dad, Doc Batson and Mom, Sharon are looking for her first win. Jason Holbrook had his #17 Camaro going good and finished fourth.

Be sure to be with us this Saturday night for the Ugly Duckling Car Sales 100 for Mini- Stocks. They will race along with the rest of the Bronson Race Series. A live remote broadcasst from Ugly Ducking car sales is scheduled Saturday afternoon in Ocala from 11-2 PM. Stop by if you get a chance and then come on out to the races. See you there, Saturday night. Racing at 7:30 PM.
