Russell 50 lap Mini-Stock Winner at Hialeah

by Marty Little
HIALEAH, Fla. - Defending Late Model Sportsman champion Gary McGoron avoided problems all evening and ran to his first feature win of the season in notching the 25 lap feature event Saturday night at Hialeah Speedway. Greg Kaouk led until lap 10 when David Weaver worked his way past on the bottom side just as Kaouk and Bobby Shelton made contact and spun in turn one. McGoron took command on the restart and was never headed, taking an easy win over Kaouk, Weaver and Shelton. Street Stock points leader Rick Lutz continued his mastery of the division as he ran to his third victory of the season. Mike Orth gave chase but came up short in the 25 lap contest. Gary Padula, Wesley Horne and Steve Godlewski rounded out the top five.

Buddy Sizemore appeared headed for the win in the 50 lap Mini Stock headliner only to have a lapped car tag him on lap 31 to end his night. At that point David Russell assumed the top spot and held off Kenny Strong to the checkers for his sixth win of the year. Bill Calder, Richard Thomas and Larry Johnson were next to the stripe.

Despite running well for several seasons, Charles Whitehouse could never find victory lane, but that ended Saturday night as he led wire to wire for his first career win in the 25 lap Cyclone feature. Mike Powres, Chad Orth, Roger Pfau and Frank Kelliher completed the top five finishers.

Doug Capps proved to be the best of the visiting Mini Cup runners as he snagged the lead from Mike Harrison and sped to the win. Chris Heilman and Carlos Gonzalez trailed the leaders at the line.
